We were visited by Paul Nolle from Habitat for Humanity.  They were founded in Rockford in 1988 and built their first home here in 1991.  So far they've built 125 homes and have six in the works for this year.  Their vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.  A popular misconception is that the homes are given away.  Actually, there is a mortgage but with 0% interest.  The family must be willing to partner and must put in 300 hours of work on the home and show ability to pay (also, there is a $1,500 down payment). They can choose from 12 floor plans.  Paul was happy to inform us that they are partnering with Guilford High School.  Thanks for sharing, Paul.
