Playworks
Oct. 29, 2018
Playtime is kids’ time. But schools can and should create play environments that help kids be their best. Studies show that recess matters: a thoughtful approach to recess improves children’s physical health and social and emotional learning. Playworks helps schools and districts make the most of recess through on-site staffing, consultative support, professional development, free resources, and more. We also support youth programs and other organizations that wish to improve playtime. Organizations like SHAPE America, The Centers for Disease Control, and City Year all look to Playworks to inform practice and policy. |

Overview the programs offered by the department of College and Career Readiness at WCTC
Nov. 26, 2018
Linda will give an overview the programs offered by the department of College and Career Readiness at Waukesha County Technical College. Adults who have not yet earned a high school diploma, who are learning English as an additional language or need to improve their academic skills can get free instruction at WCTC. In addition, our department provides these same services at the Waukesha County Jail. New on the horizon is that this program is moving from the Waukesha campus, across from the YMCA to the Pewaukee campus in January. Linda Gordy is the Associate Dean of College and Career Readiness at WCTC. Linda is a teacher at heart and has had a long history in education. She is licensed as a special educator, general educator and a reading specialist. She was a K-12 teacher and a teacher educator before coming to work at WCTC. |

Caring For Others
Dec. 03, 2018
John Certalic ismanaging director of CARING FOR OTHERS and author of "The Richer Life Found in Caring for Others". Relating Well by Listening Well If there was only one area we could work on to improve our relationships it would be to listen well. It’s the perfect gift we can give people on our Christmas list, and it won’t cost one cent. Henri Nouwen said this about listening: “The beauty of listening is that those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking their words more seriously, and start discovering their own true selves. Listening is a form of spiritual hospitality by which you invite strangers to become friends, to get to know their inner selves more fully, and even dare to be silent with you." |

World Affairs Seminar
Feb. 25, 2019
Social media—its joys, sorrows, and everything in between—is here to stay as an integral part of our everyday lives. It impacts how we think, perceive, and communicate with others on a minute-by-minute basis—and helps shape the face we present to the world. We will address social media head on at the 2019 World Affairs Seminar, discussing ethical dilemmas, issues of privacy, transparency and identity, and the economic and political ramifications. Are we empowering people or fueling the flames of hatred, extremism, and spiraling mental health concerns? From Facebook to Instagram to Twitter, social media continues to evolve and we need to understand its promise and perils to fully harness a technology that can truly make the world a better place. |

Paddle For A Purpose
Mar. 18, 2019
Barb and Gene Geiger will present a slide presentation about the five-month kayak service trip they took in their homemade tandem kayak. Paddling from the Headwaters of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, they stopped to volunteer with over two dozen non-profit organizations in towns along the way. In order to share their many inspiring stories of people helping people, Barb wrote a memoir called Paddle for a Purpose, which was published in April of 2018 by eLectio Publishing. Barb and Gene will give a slide overview of their trip and share what they learned in the process. |
