Chief Clarence LouieChief Clarence Louie is addressing the Penticton Rotary club about his book Rez Rules. Chief Louie’s book Rez Rules is receiving critical acclaim for its blunt assessment of the “Indian Problem” cultural genocide strategy adopted in the U.S. and Canada. The horrors of residential schools and papal apologies may fade from the front page and it is the voice of Chief Louie that will keep first nations issues front and centre. Chief Louie will be addressing the Penticton Rotary club on Wednesday, August 10 at 12 noon at the Match restaurant at the Cascades Casino. ![]() |

Rotary goes International![]() An important part of a Rotary Clubs mission is to support not only its local community but also, in a broader sense, people around the world who may not be as fortunate as we are in Canada. During the past two years, the Rotary Club of Penticton has been involved in many international projects. Allocating a very small yearly budget, we were able to support the following projects: • We gave one “Hippo Roller” to villagers in Africa. This device, similar to a roller we use in landscaping, contains a large reservoir and allows women (this is generally their duty) in small villages to reduce the number of trips they are making to get water from wells that are sometimes many kilometers away from their homes. Using the roller does reduce their risk to be attacked by animals or human predators. • We funded one “Shelter Box” to support the victims of big earthquakes in the world. A shelter box contains, a tent, a wood pellet stove, utensils to cook and to eat as well as blankets to keep people warm. It allows families who lost their homes to have a place to live during the time they rebuild. • We participated to the “Days For Girls” project: This global initiative, supported by a group of women from Penticton as part of many groups in North America, makes available a little bag (A Kit) with washable and re-usable sanitary pads for young girls in Africa and India. In those parts of the world, many families cannot afford the cost of disposable pads, therefore the girls cannot go to school during several days each month. Consequently, they get so far behind that they eventually abandon school. The “ kits” are handmade by women like the ones we are supporting here in Penticton. This simple solution can make a major difference in the future of these young girls by allowing them to continue their education. • The Rotary Club of Penticton is part of a global Rotary International initiative to provide drinkable water to people in Haiti. This country, the poorest in North America, has had several natural disasters in the past ten years in addition to be plagued by political instability and corruption. The two recent earthquakes have destroyed a lot of the source of drinkable water for Haitians. Therefore, people are drinking contaminated water making them gravely ill and killing many. Rotary created the “Hanwash” project, a large initiative supported by our Rotary District. As part of this project our club, along with 20 others in Canada and the U.S., has been involved in a pilot project with the objective of providing drinkable water to one “commune” (the equivalent of a small county) servicing about 400 families. We first funded the design of a sustainable solution and recently the project received a global grant from Rotary International to the amount of $490,000 to build the first well that will serve the commune of Ferrier. More recently, our Club donated $5,000 to International Red Cross in support of people victims of the war in Ukraine. When someone gives to the Rotary Club of Penticton via individual donations or by participating at one of our fundraising events, you are not only supporting our community but you also make good around the world. Michel Martel is Director, Club Services, for the Rotary Club of Penticton.

World Polio EventOur World Polio Night was a Great Success with our Rotary Club raising over $2500 towards polio eradication Drew Nagy - the Foundation Chair of the Rotary Club of Penticton spoke about the Polio initiative and what it means to our club Today, on World Polio Day, Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners announced that wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. WPV3 is only the third infectious human disease-causing pathogen to be eradicated in history, following smallpox and wild poliovirus type 2. This achievement means that two of the three wild polio strains have now been wiped out, an important marker of progress against the disease. The announcement comes on the heels of recent news that Nigeria has gone three years without a case of wild poliovirus, which means that the entire African region could be certified wild poliovirus-free in sometime in 2020. “The eradication of wild poliovirus type three is a critical step in Rotary’s fight to eradicate polio,” said Michael K. McGovern, Chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “Even as we’re addressing major challenges in Pakistan and Afghanistan, we continue to make historic progress that shows us that eradication is possible. Today is World Polio Day—a time to reflect on our efforts, how far we’ve come, and the work that still needs to be done to fulfill our promise of a polio-free world. It’s important that we remain optimistic and harness the momentum of this good news as we tackle the remaining challenges in the global effort to end polio.” The fundraiser had great food, games and fellowship ![]() Thank you to Drew, Neil and Rhonda for organizing the event

Rotary Does Good in our Community![]() Fresh start for 20 women fleeing abuse in Penticton area The Rotary Club of Penticton earmarked $10,000 for hope chests for SOWINS’ clients
Twenty women fleeing abuse in the Penticton area are getting a hand-up from the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS), thanks to a generous donation by the Rotary Club of Penticton. The club earmarked $10,000 for the non-profit society in order to build 20 hope chests or starter kits for women who are starting over after leaving their home. Debbie Scarborough, executive director of SOWINS, explained that these kits contain much more than just the necessary items for the women, and possibly their children, to get by. “What it’s going to is women that are finally getting free from abuse, that have permanent and safe, affordable housing, they often walk away with nothing. Sometimes when we leave from home, we have a hope chest,” said Scarborough. “These women did not have that opportunity so the Rotary is giving them a hope chest. And it’s more than that because it’s giving them hope, because someone is supporting them on their journey.” Natalie Ferebee, president of the Rotary Club of Penticton, and club member Lori Lalonde have already assembled and delivered six of the boxes to the club, which contain items such as dishes, bedding, cleaning supplies and other home essentials. Scarborough said three of the boxes have already been earmarked for specific clients and three will be kept on-hand at the society’s administration office. “Everything that we raise through the Rotary Club, we give back to the community. So SOWINS being one of them is huge, because it helps our community members to start their new life, and then hopefully come join our Rotary,” said Ferebee. “If they want to do the same thing for others, then that’s another way they can give back to the community.” All three women agreed that starting from scratch and furnishing a home in these instances can be extremely costly and that these kits would make all the difference in the lives of the women and children that SOWINS helps. Scarborough said the society currently serves 3,400 women and children a year and she’s seen the desperate circumstances they’ve been forced into. “I know women that will go into public washrooms and take as much as the toilet paper as they can, because it’s costly. When you think of you and I, we just add toilet paper on our grocery list,” said Scarborough. “We know women that will share one bowl and one plate with their children. Pillows are a luxury, they sleep on the floor.” To report a typo, email: editor@pentictonwesternnews.com. <p<< p=""> Jordyn Thomson | Reporter JordynThomson ![]() Send Jordyn Thomson an email. Peanut butter drive to benefit Penticton food bankOur very own Randall Bamford ![]() Save-On-Foods general manager Randall Bamford is hoping to turn a sticky situation into a bonus for the Salvation Army Community Food Bank this Christmas. Starting Friday, for one week the grocery store is donating a jar of peanut butter to the food bank for each jar customers purchase and give to the cause. “We started this when I was in Williams Lake,” said Bamford about how he came up with the idea. “The food bank there ran an article in the local paper saying how low their inventory was at that time of year (February) but I mean it’s low all the time, and what they really need is protein, so things like tuna and peanut butter are great, so I said ‘hey, lets do a peanut butter drive.’” Read more: Update: ‘Stunning’ support for food drive After doing a costing the drive proved to be feasible and for that week, like they are doing here, there were jars of peanut butter at each till and customers were asked if they would like purchase one and donate it. The response proved to be overwhelming. “We really didn’t think it was going to take off the way it did,” recalled Bamford. “We got 1,700 jars for the food bank and we could have done more if we’d had more peanut butter, we actually ran out three times, so we’re prepared for this one. “Every time a customer bought one and donated it to our huge stack of peanut butter that we created at the front of the store we would donate one as well right then and there. So the cashiers were walking over with two peanut butters for every customer that bought one and putting them on the pile.” That event was so popular that Bamford’s idea peaked an interest at the corporate level and this year all 160 Save-On-Foods stores are having their own peanut butter drive. “I’m just really hoping each one of them pulls it off, and I’m really hoping we can beat 1,700 jars at our store,” he said. The specific item is the 500-gram smooth Western Family brand. Manager John Rankin of the Salvation Army had one word when asked by Bamford if the drive would be something of interest. “Great,” said Rankin, adding: “The protein is excellent, it’s a staple and people can utilize it easily. Clients are very appreciative of peanut butter.” He also expressed his appreciation to Save-On-Foods for its efforts in helping the food bank and an especially busy time of year for the organization |

He spoke of the importance of being a sponsor and mentor to not only bring new members to the Club but to ensure their retention. Under the Membership umbrella are The Recruitment Committee and Retention Committee who are busy helping to drive our numbers up and keep them there. As Don turns 71 on his next birthday, that is the goal for membership before the end of the Rotary year. Brian Hughes spoke of our upcoming speaker on August 20th, Kelsey Cox, who is the District 5060 Scholar. She spoke at the International Rotary conference in Australia. Don't miss this meeting and please bring your partner and any potential new members.

The Gusto Award was presented today by Ken Davis to Sandra Curnow for all her efforts in organizing a very successful Pioneers Reception. Sandra thanked all the volunteers that helped on both the Saturday and Sunday.
Our guest speaker Dave Snyder was introduced as having written a book “Pen Hi, Chronology of a High School”. He provided a slide show of many photos dating from the first grad class in 1912 to the current school. From 1914 to 1936 the old school was situated where the library now sits. Nearly 40% of the boys were Sea Cadets in the 1930’s and many more were Air Cadets. In 1945 1300 students marched down Main Street with placards stating “Vote Yes” for an increased tax base for their school to receive more funds. In 1949 there was a fire which caused much damage to the school. Even PM Pierre Trudeau visited the school in the 1970’s! Twenty teachers served for over 30 years; sixty teachers served for over 20 years and the there have been 17 principals over its lifetime. Rory McIvor thanked Dave with our esteemed Rotary pen.
Today, we were graced to have Barb Hoolaeff as our Sheriff. The “Duelling Sandra’s”, Barb’s very inventive game to have club members who typically confuse the two ladies names, answer questions about Sandra Krauer and Sandra Curnow. The game resulted in many coins being gatherede at each table! Welcome back Barb!
Draw - The winning ticket was held by Brian Hughes for the pot of $303 but he did not draw the joker from the deck.
Pres Dave closed the meeting with Newfie joke pretty much on time.

This is a three-part, facilitated, classroom course to be completed on three Saturdays throughout the year. While the interactive discussions will take you from the basics to a practical application of what is needed to be in a club or district leadership position, this course is also extremely beneficial for new Rotarians to enable them to enjoy a very successful and fulfilling experience as a new Rotarian. New Rotarians with leadership ability should seriously consider taking this course to realize that they could apply their leadership potential in Rotary and at the same time gain personal development.
We were honoured today to have "Staff Sergeant" Anna McIvor presented President Dave Smith with his much loved Newfoundland flag. It was mounted in its special spot along with the flags representing the United States, Canada and Rotary. It was definitely a tearful moment for Dave!!

Business Meeting Overview
This October (and first part of November) has been a traveller's wishlist and an exchange student's dream. Thailand is satiating my architecture, art and culture buff within. October was filled with an array of exciting adventures such as attending a traditional Thai wedding, going to Ban Chiang: an archaeological pottery site, eating bugs at a walking night market, modelling traditional Thai dress in a Rotary sponsored fashion shoot, seeing a cobra taming show and being on local t.v for a Rotary sponsored dinner for members of the community, who are diligently practising for an upcoming Chinese parade. With Rotary we also visited a rural school for the unveiling ceremony of children's play ground equipment.
Our fellow Rotarian Jackie was especially welcome today and provided some great draw prizes for our members. Vivi was the winner of a NWT licence plate.
Jackie, previously with Tourism BC, decided it was time to start her own company called Hotkey Marketing Group. Her company looks after marketing for many organizations as well as business development in the NWT, Saskatchewan and the Maritimes. With her expertise in wholesaling and distinction development, she provides workshops dealing with pricing and marketing strategies.
Sandra Curnow was inducted at our May 22nd meeting. Thanks to Barb for introducing Sandra to our Club. Brian shows his delight in welcoming Sandra to our Club which now has a membership of 57!
Our Club's Annual Lobster Feast and Fund Raiser supporting Rotary Community Projects. Saturday, May 25th at 6:00 pm
Our illustrious exchange student from Turkey, Melike, gave her presentation to the club. She is heading back to Turkey on July 5th at 6:00 am (hint Get out there and see her off!). Now I am a mere newcomer to this club being a 17 year member, but I can't recall a more inspiring and motivating speech! She was amazing! We will be planting her tree soon and hopefully the tree will lure her back soon. What an fantastic young woman!
To quote her "She arrived in Penticton a year ago as a kid and she leaves a woman of the world!" Melike, Welike you...very much! Come back and see us soon!
≈The Club was treated to a great presentation by Rotaplast Canada members Bud and Rita. They are raising their $100,000 they need to make the trip to operate on 100 to 150 children with cleft lip or cleft palate. What a noble cause! For more information click here.
