Thanks to the support of over 600 Rotary clubs worldwide, the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) offers educational programs to over 200,000 students in Guatemala … working to break the cycle of poverty through education.
Join fellow Rotarians at a hybrid meeting on October 14 at Rochester Golf & Country Club and via Zoom at noon. Boxed lunches will be available at 11:30 a.m. Use the orange buttons on the side of this page to pre-pay for lunch or sign-up using the "mid-day meeting" button to pay with cash or check on site! We need everyone to be accounted for either via the pre-pay option or the sign-up option so enough lunches are ordered. Sign up for a meeting task here.
Our speaker, Christi Eisenberg, is a long-time advocate for Rotary's project work in Guatemala, and has been involved with our parent organization, Cooperative for Education, since the early 2000s. Christi has traveled to Guatemala before, so she has great insight into the Guatelmala Literacy Project's need for support, and kindly volunteered to join our Ambassadors team last year.
On October 24, World Polio Day, Rotarians, their families, and their guests are invited to Strike Out Polio at Bowlocity in Rochester to raise funds to wipe Polio off the face of the earth. The event is a celebration of Rotary’s progress to eradicate polio and an opportunity to create awareness about the continued need to raise funds to complete the task of eradicating polio. Rotary has been a driving force in the eradication of polio. Polio has no cure. It is a crippling and potentially fatal disease for children. While polio has been eradicated from the US, until it is eradicated from every country, it remains a risk to children. Currently, polio exists in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s crucial we, as Rotarians, continue working to keep other countries polio-free.
For those in attendance on October 24, you can make your donation to Polio Plus, in-person at the event. For those unable to attend, write your check to "The Rotary Foundation" and send to TRCR's PO Box. A form will be completed for you and submitted to the District 5960 office making you eligible for recognition points.
SPARE!! For every $100 you donate to Polio Plus before November 20, the District will match the donation 1:1with recognition points toward a Paul Harris Fellow award.
STRIKE!! For every donation of $365, the District will contribute additional recognition points to your Rotary International account to total 1,000 in order to award a Paul Harris Fellow.
The Rotary Clubs of Rochester STRIVE program is in need of a few more mentors to pair with students at Rochester's three public high schools. Sign-up to mentor (or donate) to this year's STRIVE program by filling out the form. Mentors do not need to be a Rotarian just someone who enjoys meeting with high school students and watching their progress towards graduation. STRIVE mentors will meet with their students every second Tuesday or Wednesday of the month and once virtually in a one-on-one during the month.
John Marshall meets Tuesdays @ 11:00 am
Rochester Alternative Learning Center meets Tuesdays @ 10:15 am
Mayo meets Wednesdays @ 11:00 am
Century meets Wednesdays @ 8:15 am
Because of the unknowns of COVID, the STRIVE team delayed their request for mentors until it was decided if STRIVE would be in-person, which it is. And, now we are on a tight timeline. Please consider mentoring!
District 5960 presents One Rotary Summits, emphasizing how we can Serve to Change Lives and the power of sharing our Rotary stories. The summit emphasizes the relationship among Membership, Public Image, and Humanitarian Service through The Rotary Foundation and is a unique and effective way to help club members understand and become truly engaged in Rotary.
As a member of the Rotary Club of Rochester, there are three "To Do List" items to sign-up for the second and fourth Thursday meeting from now until the end of the year.
1. Sign-up to lead the four-way test
2. Sign-up to give a reflection
3. Sign-up to share your story by giving a vocation talk
October brings a new format to the club's Third Thursday monthly meeting. Beginning October 21, there will be four groups that will meet each month:
-- Service group (work with community partners to find volunteer opportunities)
-- Learning/affinity (learn something new or share an interest)
-- Virtual (could be a book group, Ted Talk, etc.)
-- Lunch/socialize (host picks a restaurant or a location if it is a brown bag)
You will not be assigned to any particular group but will sign-up for the group you wish to join, and it can be a different group each month!
Club President Audrey Betcher is seeking a small group of Rotarians to lead the coordination of the new format. Responsibilities include finding volunteers to lead the groups each month. The plan is that every member of the club would lead something at some point. Here are few more details:
Topics and hosts change monthly. (So when you are asked to host, it will not be a long-term commitment.)
Sign-ups will be required for most, likely with limits depending on the topic/activity.
On the 2nd Thursday of the month, the different hosts will highlight their activity to showcase the different options.
We will adjust number/size of groups in the future as we learn more.
Please contact Audrey for more information or to volunteer.
