Rotary Midday Meeting
Join us via Zoom this Thursday, August 20, 12 - 1 pm for our Rotary Midday Meeting. Our program will be "Tribal Sovereignty - Tribes Inherent Authority to Govern Themselves" presented by Rebecca Crooks - Stratton, Secretary/Treasurer at Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC). Crooks-Stratton will explore the importance of sovereignty and walk attendees through 200 years of federal Indian policy and how it has impacted tribal nations. She will also cover economic development in Native American communities and provide present-day examples of how tribes like the SMSC work alongside federal, state and local governments on shared priorities.

Rotarians and friends of Rotary on our email list will receive a Zoom meeting invitation with the link to participate. If you would like to join us and do not receive the email, please contact the Rotary office at romnrotary@gmail.com.

August is Rotary Membership Month - Rotary Fact Sheet
Rotary unites people from all continents and cultures who take action to deliver real, long-term solutions to our world’s most persistent issues. Through volunteering, our 1.2 million members make lifelong friendships that transcend political and cultural boundaries and foster global understanding and respect.

Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. Each year, Rotary members invest hundreds of millions of dollars and countless volunteer hours to promote health, peace and prosperity in communities across the globe. Rotary members take action by providing access to clean water and sanitation, supporting education, preventing and treating disease, saving mothers and children and growing local economies.

Ending polio
For more than 30 years, Rotary has been the driving force in the effort to end polio worldwide. Alongside our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we have achieved a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases, with less than 200 cases of wild polio reported in 2019 compared with 350,000 a year in the late 1980s. Our members have contributed $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Today, just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary remains committed to ending polio, and will raise $50 million per year, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars through a matching agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

History
For 115 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.
Why Being Kind is as Important as Ever

Your parents told you to be nice to people. Guess what? They were right. Here’s why.

Doing good doesn’t only benefit other people. It helps us, too.

Studies show that helping others boosts serotonin, a neurotransmitter that makes us feel satisfied. Another benefit to feeling rewarded when we do good: It lowers our stress levels. Who couldn’t use that right now?

Facing the COVID-19 pandemic, people everywhere are feeling anxious about their health, their families, their jobs, and their futures.

“When we are all feeling lower than we are used to feeling, with some levels of situational depression, we all need a boost,” says psychologist Mary Berge, a member of the Rotary Club of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, USA, who has led discussions with many Rotary clubs about coping during the pandemic.

“There has been a lot of research that when we are helping others, or when we are doing something for someone else, our reward centers light up in the brain and our stress levels go down as cortisol is released.”

Rotary District 5960 Official Opening Call for District Governor 2023-2024
It is my pleasure to officially open the nomination period for selecting District 5960’s District Governor for the 2023-2024 Rotary year!

I am excited to be leading the District and the District Governor Nominating Committee with this unbelievably important task. Having just come off my year in the District Governor role, I can tell you the journey from applying, interviewing, preparing, and doing the role, has been nothing short of amazing!

As I have shared, I was not looking to apply for District Governor. But others saw something in me and felt I would be good in the role. It is only with this support and encouragement that I made the decision to apply. And that is where you come in! You may know someone that you have seen up close and thought they would make a successful District Governor. I would ask that you give that qualified Rotarian the same encouragement I received. What are those qualifications?
  • Have been your Club’s president for a full Rotary year
  • Are a member in good standing
  • Have an interest in sharing your Rotary passion with fellow Rotarians

Support Youth Programs Through the Rotary Holiday Classic
Last year was a milestone year for the Rotary Holiday Classic. Thanks to past support over the last 32 years, we reached the one million dollar mark in awarding grants to youth programs in our community!

The Rotary Clubs of Rochester are planning to hold the 2020 Rotary Holiday Classic, presented by Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine, on December 29th and 30th at the Mayo Civic Center.  We recognize there is considerable uncertainty due to the pandemic. We will look to both the Minnesota State High School League and our health experts for guidance as the event dates get closer. We’re cautiously optimistic the event will be held as planned. If the event is cancelled due to pandemic concerns, sponsorship funds will either be designated for grants to local youth organizations in the Rochester area, supporting local needs as with past events or returned to you. The Rotary Clubs of Rochester are committed to carrying on the tradition of supporting youth programs.
