The third Thursday of each month is what members of The Rotary Club of Rochester call Third Thursday Small Group meetings. This is the week Rotarians gather in their preassigned small groups at a time and place predetermined by the individual groups. Whether it be online or in-person, if you're unsure where and when your group is planning to meet this week, contact your group's leader.
This event is an open invitation to all Rotarians and their guests. Come at noon for lunch and the Rotary meeting and program and stay and play golf. Golfers of all skill levels are encouraged to play. Come for all or when you can.

The Rotary Club of Rochester Community Foundation is excited to announce STRIVE as the recipient of the $5,000.00 Community Impact Grant for 2021.
STRIVE is a program for high school seniors who have faced some academic challenges, but want to make the most of their last year of high school. Students who choose to participate in STRIVE are matched with an adult mentor from one of the Rochester Rotary Clubs. Students and mentors meet once a month for about 50 minutes during the school day and talk about how school is going and what their plans are for the future. Meetings also include presentations on topics relevant to life after high school – college, careers, finances, etc. The goal is for students to improve their grades and scholarships are awarded to those who show the most improvement in their GPA during the first three quarters.
STRIVE is a well established program that we felt best met the criteria we had set forth for our inaugural Community Impact Grant. The foundation board is committed to improving both the application and selection processes as we prepare for next year's grant.
Edgar Botello, a Rotaractor and undergraduate student of the Medical Degree program at the State's University (Autonomous University of Nuevo Léon in Mexico) has arrived in Rochester for his one year stay. He was accepted as a Research Trainee in the Neurologic Surgery Department at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, for a one-year temporary appointment beginning this August 2021. Edgar is living with his first host family, Bill Wiktor and Elaine Case.

The three Rotary clubs and several individual donors will be supporting a request from the Rochester Public Schools Literacy Coach. This donation will help support the new 'science of reading' based teacher training and rollout plan - a major initiative in Rochester to ultimately improve 3rd grade reading proficiency beginning in the lower grades.
Our contribution will fund some missing reading tools for teachers. The teachers will use a "sound wall" in daily lessons. Sound walls help children to recognize, identify, and produce the 44 individual phonemes in words. Over time children associate spelling patterns with phonemes. RPS has created sound cards, sound wall examples, and lesson plans to support this resource. We will be providing the missing element - small, handheld unbreakable mirrors for kids to use in small group instruction to help form and produce each phoneme.
This contribution is exciting since it directly aligns with the work of Cradle 2 Career, directly supports teachers and children, and will have a real measurable impact. Rochester Public Schools has agreed to provide us specific results (beginning and end of year data) for progress being made by this work.
