The Rochester Public Library recently suffered damage due to a water leak. To assist a great asset to our community, we are asking for book donations for the Friends of the Library Bookstore. Any and all books are welcome! We will be collecting at our Rotary Club of Rochester meeting this Thursday, October 10th, 11:30 am - 1 pm, Suite 101, Mayo Civic Center. The books will be delivered to their temporary home in the Art Center.
Volunteers from The Rotary Club of Rochester and Bleu Duck Kitchen will be serving guests at Ronald McDonald House Rochester on Monday, October 14, 5-8 pm. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5 pm and will receive a tour before set-up at 5:30. Dinner is served from 6-7. Volunteers are welcome to eat with the families. Bleu Duck Kitchen will not only be sending volunteers but will also be providing the food for the meal. We are grateful for their generous contribution! Register here to volunteer.
We are all in Rotary to do good in the world. In fact, “Doing Good in the World” is The Rotary Foundation’s motto! The Rotary Foundation is the engine that allows us to do all that we do in our communities and throughout the world, and like any engine it needs “gas” to run. The Foundation’s gas is the funds that our members and others contribute, as the more money we give the larger impact we can have on those around us.
It’s not only important to encourage each of us to give as Rotarians, but to showcase the impact we have through our giving. After all, it does take money to do the great work we do. Through showcasing our impact, not only can we educate our fellow members about the good work we do but, more importantly, celebrate that work!
That’s what is so important about Rotary Foundation Month in November! The goal of Foundation Month is to educate and inspire all of us as Rotarians so that we understand the impact that our giving has…in our communities and around the world.
Musa Muhammed Ali, a farmer in Borno state, Nigeria, has had to deal with the many ways polio has affected his life. For instance, he used to have to pay for transportation when he needed to buy feed for his animals. But after receiving a hand-operated tricycle funded through Rotary’s PolioPlus grants, Ali (pictured above) can now spend that money on other necessities. His life was changed by the “plus” in PolioPlus.
When we talk about PolioPlus, we know we are eradicating polio, but do we realize how many added benefits the program brings? The “plus” is something else that is provided as a part of the polio eradication campaign. It might be a hand-operated tricycle or access to water. It might be additional medical treatment, bed nets, or soap. A 2010 study estimates that vitamin A drops given to children at the same time as the polio vaccine have prevented 1.25 million deaths by decreasing susceptibility to infectious diseases.
In these pages, we take you to Nigeria, which could soon be declared free of wild poliovirus, to show you some of the many ways the polio eradication campaign is improving lives.
