Dr. Julie Ponto, Professor and Program Coordinator for the Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist program at Winona State University – Rochester will speak about WSU-Rochester's connections to Global Health. Dr. Pronto teaches graduate nursing courses and advises students Master’s thesis and doctoral clinical practice projects at WSU-Rochester. She received a Master’s degree from the University of California-San Francisco, and a PhD from the University of Utah. Dr. Ponto’s research interests include survivors’ and spouses adaptation to cancer, international health, substance use disorder, education, and includes both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Dr. Ponto’s clinical interests include palliative care, advanced directives, oncology quality and safety, and improving oncology care. Dr. Ponto has research or clinical collaborations in healthcare internationally including Japan, Czech Republic, New Zealand, and Brazil and has an international travel study program for graduate Education and Nursing students in New Zealand. Dr. Ponto is Past-President of the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC), was recognized as Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year by ONCC, and was the first Adult-Gerontology certified Clinical Nurse Specialist in Minnesota.

The three Rotary clubs and several individual donors will be supporting a request from the Rochester Public Schools Literacy Coach. This donation will help support the new 'science of reading' based teacher training and rollout plan - a major initiative in Rochester to ultimately improve 3rd grade reading proficiency beginning in the lower grades.
Our contribution will fund some missing reading tools for teachers. The teachers will use a "sound wall" in daily lessons. Sound walls help children to recognize, identify, and produce the 44 individual phonemes in words. Over time children associate spelling patterns with phonemes. RPS has created sound cards, sound wall examples, and lesson plans to support this resource. We will be providing the missing element - small, handheld unbreakable mirrors for kids to use in small group instruction to help form and produce each phoneme.
This contribution is exciting since it directly aligns with the work of Cradle 2 Career, directly supports teachers and children, and will have a real measurable impact. Rochester Public Schools has agreed to provide us specific results (beginning and end of year data) for progress being made by this work.

The Rotary Club of Rochester Community Foundation is excited to announce STRIVE as the recipient of the $5,000.00 Community Impact Grant for 2021.
STRIVE is a program for high school seniors who have faced some academic challenges, but want to make the most of their last year of high school. Students who choose to participate in STRIVE are matched with an adult mentor from one of the Rochester Rotary Clubs. Students and mentors meet once a month for about 50 minutes during the school day and talk about how school is going and what their plans are for the future. Meetings also include presentations on topics relevant to life after high school – college, careers, finances, etc. The goal is for students to improve their grades and scholarships are awarded to those who show the most improvement in their GPA during the first three quarters.
STRIVE is a well established program that we felt best met the criteria we had set forth for our inaugural Community Impact Grant. The foundation board is committed to improving both the application and selection processes as we prepare for next year's grant.

The cards are purchased at face value, but the club receives 5% back from Apollo Liquor and Kwik Trip and 4% back from Menards.
