ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA, October 6, 2020  - It is with disappointment that the Rotary Clubs of Rochester announce the cancellation of the 2020 Rotary Holiday Classic basketball showcase. Based on the October 1, 2020 Minnesota State High League (MSHSL) announcement of COVID-19 based guidelines for a revised 2020-2021 high school basketball season, Rotarians have determined that this year’s fundraising event cannot take place. MSHSL has delayed the start of the basketball season, reduced the total number of basketball season games, and eliminated spectators in the stands. The MSHSL and Rotary Clubs of Rochester have made the health of the basketball players, their families, and our event staff and volunteers the primary consideration when making these decisions.
Rotary would like to thank Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine, other sponsors and advertisers, Mayo Civic Center staff, participating schools, Classic volunteers, and event attendees for their continued support of the Rotary Holiday Classic. Funds raised in 2020 through generous sponsorships, advertising, and the contributions of all Rotarians will be distributed as usual to nonprofit and education-related youth programs. More information can be found online via the Holiday Classic link at
The Rotary Holiday Classic is an annual fundraising event which began in 1988 and has raised more than one million dollars which has been distributed to youth programs in Rochester. The original Classic was a three-day, boys basketball tournament. The event doubled in size year two and included girls teams, as well. Through the years several format changes have been made, but Rochester teams remain involved, fans and the community continue to support the fundraiser, a corporate sponsor, now Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine, is involved to help underwrite event costs, and Rotarians sustain their enthusiasm. We are excited that the continued history of the Rotary Holiday Classic remains to be written.
The Rotary Clubs of Rochester are part of a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
