Westwood Hills Nature Center 40th Anniversary
Objectives:
  1. Commemorate the 40th anniversary of WHNC;
  2. Conduct an event that would raise awareness of Rotary in the community;
  3. Recognize Rotary for the sculpture at the WHNC;
  4. Rotary makes a contribution to the city for summer programs. Note, the SLP Rotary Foundation has budgeted $1,000.00 to sponsor this event.
Depending on COVID rules, event will be late summer/early fall on a Saturday from 10:00-3:00. Schedule TBD. This event is in lieu of Bundled Up!
  • Event will be done in cooperation with both SLP Rotary clubs and the city.
  • Event will be on the same day as celebrating the 40th anniversary of WHNC.
  • Rotarians will volunteer to help with any events – tours, games, raffle, parking, traffic control, etc.. (Will need to order Rotary hats/shirts to recognize the group as volunteers)
  • Event will include a dedication of the sculpture, with photo opportunities for Rotary publicity.
  • Photos at the sculpture. Hire a professional photographer (paid for the Rotary clubs). Photographer takes pictures, Rotarians get email addresses and pictures are sent (compliments of Rotary). Photographer can provide business cards to anyone who wants to purchase photos or have portraits done. Will need volunteers to manage traffic for this event.
  • Members from both clubs will secure prizes for a raffle. Tickets sold at the event and winning numbers will be called 1-2 hours before the close of the event. Raffle proceeds will be shared with each club. Outdoor sound system will be needed to announce winning tickets. Raffle table will be set up under the roof outside on the west side of the entrance.
  • Maybe consider allowing food trucks which will pay a fee to be there. Fee payments split by the clubs. Limit of ____ trucks for the event. This may not be possible given the size of the parking lot.
  • Anticipating a significant crowd and the capacity of the nature center parking lot… there will need to be a system for traffic control and parking. Will need some help from SLP PD.
  • Will need volunteers in the parking lot to advise as to spaces available (two way radios will be needed); several volunteers will be needed at the entrance to allow traffic into the WHNC, depending on spaces available; alternate parking will be secured from Park Harbor church and the junior high school. It will be a short walk to the nature center entrance. Signage will be posted at these two locations with volunteers directing traffic to these two locations. Might consider shuttle buses from these locations to the WHNC. There would also be parking along the neighboring streets. The residents will have to be notified by flyer a few days before the event.
  • Spaces at WHNC will be primarily for handicapped and vendors/staff/volunteers.
