Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research at UNMC
Christopher J. Kratochvil, M.D. is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Vice President for Research for Nebraska Medicine, leading many of the clinical research initiatives for the academic health system. He is Executive Director of the Nebraska Global Center for Health Security, serves as the Institutional Official for the UNMC Human Research Protection Program and Director of the UNMC Center for Clinical and Translational Research. Dr. Kratochvil is a Core Competency Advisor for Active and Passive Medical Defense against Weapons of Mass Destruction and Consequence Management for the National Strategic Research Institute. As the Medical Director of UNeHealth, which was formed to serve as a point of contact for commercial clinical research partnerships and growth, he oversees commercial contracting and agreements for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, facilitating clinical and translational research.
Recently, Past President Paul Cohen presided over the Permanent Badge Ceremony for our new permanent badgers: Kevin Baitey, an Architectural Designer at Carlson West Povondra Architects and Pastor Heidi McGinness, Clergy. Kevin was sponsored to Rotary by Mitch Hunt, and Heidi was sponsored by Okley Gibbs. Congratulations, Heidi and Kevin!

January 11, 2023 was our Rotary Outland Trophy luncheon, and the 2022 Outland Trophy winner Olu Oluwatimi was our honored guest. It was our first meeting of the year and first meeting of the month, so we greeted our birthday celebrants. The meeting was presided over by Past President Paul Cohen, who also conferred permanent badges to Kevin Baitey and Heidi McGinness. Below are some of the photos from last week.

Recently, PDG Carol Horner presented the Rotary Club of Omaha the Rotary International's recognition for exceeding its PolioPlus goals during Rotary Year 2021-2022 under the leadership of President Aileen Warren. Accepting the recognition on behalf of the club and IPP Aileen Warren is PP John Sullivan and PP Steve McCollister.
PolioPlus enables Rotary members in polio-free countries to provide support to fellow members in polio-affected countries for polio eradication activities. PolioPlus is doing so much more than eradicating polio. Below is an article lifted from Rotary International.
Musa Muhammed Ali, a farmer in Borno state, Nigeria, has had to deal with the many ways polio has affected his life. For instance, he used to have to pay for transportation when he needed to buy feed for his animals. But after receiving a hand-operated tricycle funded through Rotary’s PolioPlus grants, Ali (pictured above) can now spend that money on other necessities. His life was changed by the “plus” in PolioPlus.
When we talk about PolioPlus, we know we are eradicating polio, but do we realize how many added benefits the program brings? The “plus” is something else that is provided as a part of the polio eradication campaign. It might be a hand-operated tricycle or access to water. It might be additional medical treatment, bed nets, or soap. A 2010 study estimates that vitamin A drops given to children at the same time as the polio vaccine have prevented 1.25 million deaths by decreasing susceptibility to infectious diseases. The Omaha Downtown Rotary partners with Stephens Center in serving hot meals to its residents.
