Because of COVID, our Honor Roll will be fully virtual this year, starting at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, May 12th. You can attend the event by using this Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/99895696759?pwd=T2pKdTJLcUxsYkFKaWVBU25adFFtdz09 Passcode: 924122
Our Honor Roll program has been honoring 8th graders since the program was started by club President Louis Hiller in 1927. Over the last 94 years, we have recognized over 18,000 eighth graders who have been selected by their schools on the basis of Scholarship, Character, Presence, and Integrity. This year’s event will be honoring 414 eighth graders representing 58 schools from across Douglas County. We also provide six scholarships to seniors who were honored as eighth-grade Honor Roll students.
During the event we’ll be highlighting:
·Two eighth-graders speaking to represent the 2021 Honor Roll class
·Our six scholarship winners. One, Daisy Freidman, will be our scholarship speaker. Daisy is an amazing young woman—here’s a story about her—and we’re looking forward to hearing her speak.
·Thanks to an anonymous donor, we’ll be giving away 10 iPads during the event. We’ve had them delivered to the schools along with the students' certificates and programs, so as we announce them the students will be doubly surprised!
·Our keynote this year is Gary Bren, who was the keynote in 2017.
Please join us for this amazing celebration of youth in our community!
Following the wedding, last weekend, Pat and I are in Colorado for some strategic recreative time. That’s one son recently engaged, two daughters married in the last five years, and our youngest, also a son, footloose and fancy-free. When I joined Rotary in 1999, they were 10, 9, 5, and 2-years-old respectively. “Time and tide wait for no man” - which provides us with a sense of urgency to be people of action.
To wit, thank you to Lori Bechtold for her leadership of our Kids Against Hunger crew on Saturday, May 8th and to Gary Bren for masterful planning of our 2021 digital experience Honor Roll program on May 12th. I hope you can be there to support our metro area eighth-graders who’ve been selected on the basis of leadership, character, scholarship, and presence since 1927 in Omaha!
I look forward to seeing you on May 19th as we welcome healthcare leader Jeanette Wojtalewicz (CHI) to our Field Club meeting. We’re having a great time getting back together. Join us when you’re ready.

We will celebrate birthdays every first Wednesday of the month. Birthday celebrants are encouraged to attend the meeting and to sit at the birthday table. Otherwise, a huge fine will be assessed. If you miss your own birthday party, that will result in a fine too.
