Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, is the 25th president of Creighton University; a position he has held since 2015.
Prior to serving as president, Fr. Hendrickson was Creighton student in the Jesuit Humanities Program in 1996, before returning to teach at the University from 2000 to 2003. He was elected to the Creighton Board of Trustees in 2013, elected president of Creighton in December 2014.
During his presidency, Creighton University has welcomed record-breaking first-year classes of more than 1,000 students each year, recorded a 99 percent outcome rate for graduates, opened a health sciences campus in Phoenix, and overseen nearly $200 million in scholarship dollars for Creighton students.
Fr. Hendrickson serves on the boards of Boston College and Xavier University; is the current chair of the BIG EAST Conference Board of Directors; and is a trustee of ILAC/Centro de Educación para la Salud Integral (CESI) in the Dominican Republic, and Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL).
A native of Fremont, Nebraska, Fr. Hendrickson holds a BA from Marquette University; an MA in philosophical resources from Fordham University; a Master of Divinity degree from the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University; and MA and PhD degrees from Columbia University.
Such a great meeting this week at the Downtown Rotary! I sat in for our illustrious leader Heather Legge along with Lisa Tonjes Moritz and had a fun time. We had several people with good news to share, a couple of wedding anniversary announcements from Adam Leong and Susan Koesters, and a nice mention from Jill Slupe about a concert she enjoyed on Sunday by a certain performer who I won’t mention. Thanks Jill! We also had information from Michelle Trawick as sponsor of the month presenting updates on UNO, and she stayed upright this time, if you remember she took a little spill last time but jumped up like a champ! We had a few guests also, several from the medical community as well as some prospective members we are wooing to join our amazing club. It was a great start.
Our guest speaker was Yvette Burks from Belize introduced by Leroy Swedlund. Yvette is a dedicated humanitarian and founding director of Belize Emergency Response Team. Her involvement with Operation Hippocrates, also known as Gift of Life has been instrumental to the program. According to Leroy, he has been trying to get Yvette and her husband Jack here to Omaha for several years and we are grateful they came. Yvette spoke to us about her involvement in our signature program. Her ability to put a “face” on the work was enlightening and fulfilling. Yvette gave us some clear insight into the quality of life and economics of Belize. The average income for a resident of Belize is under $10,000. The opportunity for folks with this income to provide medical care for their children is bleak. Statistically in the world one child of every hundred will be affected by congenital heart disease.
The program started in 1977 by coincidence from a chance meeting of a Rotarian and a medical team on a fishing trip. This relationship grew into the program it is today, which is still growing. Yvette, expressed gratitude for our continued contributions to our signature international program, Operation Hippocrates. Through networking and relationships, more and more children are being saved. Yvette stressed the importance of the children getting the care without having to leave their country. “Helping one person might not change the world, but it changes the world for one person.” Thank you, Leroy, for being dedicated to this program, and thank you to our club for supporting this impactful work.

Thanks to the efforts of Rotarians and dedicated volunteers, nearly 3,000 flags now stand at Memorial Park as part of our 9/11 Tribute. Each flag honors one of the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, displaying the name, age, location, and personal details of a victim. A special section is reserved for flags representing those with a Nebraska connection. We extend our deepest gratitude to Dan Esch for coordinating this meaningful project, and a heartfelt thanks to all the Rotarians, Boy Scouts, family members, and friends who generously volunteered their time.
The Rotaract Club of Belize City is renovating a rural school and a Rotary club-sponsored park as part of its youth-focused agenda. In April, club members met at the Hattieville Government Preschool to paint restrooms and complete other beautification work. A later phase will include new toilets. “We’ve been able to replace chalkboards in 10 classrooms with whiteboards and to donate a printer and other school and hygiene materials,” says Kristoff Nicholson, immediate past president. The club partnered with a telecom provider and raffled off smartphones to help pay for the project. It also received a District 4250 grant of $1,000. In March, club members replaced basketball and goal nets and painted benches and a playset at Love Park in Balama, another element of the project, Nicholson says.
Colombia
In January, the Rotary Club of Cúcuta-Ciudad de Arboles purchased about $600 of school supplies and delivered 100 sets of notebooks, pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, and more to students in the city. It’s about 350 miles northeast of Bogotá. Club members also visited with students in the neighborhood of Las Delicias, says Dora Patricia Lobo, a past president of the club. “The hustle and bustle and joy of these students when they receive their school package warms our souls and encourages us to continue,” Lobo says. More than 1,400 students have benefited since the project began.

Stephen Center has served the homeless and low-income in Omaha since 1984 through its three programs: Emergency Shelter, HERO Program, and Transitional Living Program. The Omaha Downtown Rotary partners with Stephens Center in serving hot meals to its residents.
