September 14, 2022 Rotary Speaker Tony Vargas
Tony Vargas
US Congressional Candidate

Tony began his career as a public-school teacher, receiving Teacher of the Year awards. He has served our community since 2013 as an Omaha Public Schools Board member. Then, as a member of the Nebraska Legislature, he passed legislation to strengthen our public schools, improve access to health care, encourage technology and innovation, and improve consumer protections.

The first generation of his family to graduate college, Tony earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Rochester and a Master in Education at Pace University. Tony and his wife, Lauren, are proud parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini Church, where Tony and Lauren were married.
Mitch Hunt is Paul Harris Fellow
Recently, The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Chair Heather Legge recognized Mitch Hunt as Paul Harris Fellow. Mitch is currently serving in the Rotary Board. He is former President of Broken Bow Rotary and has been a Rotarian in Omaha for almost two years. Mitch is the owner of Huntrex, a digital experience management company.

Huntrex helps organizations design and manage digital experiences, from websites to dedicated Android and iOS apps. Websites and mobile apps powered by Huntrex feature effective design, leading technology, simplified management, and ongoing personal support. Local startups to national organizations are powered by Huntrex.

His Midwestern roots and entrepreneurial family galvanized Mitch’s progressive spirit and taught him the importance of integrity and quality workmanship. You will find Mitch leading Huntrex, on family adventures, volunteering within the community, and continuing to embrace lifelong learning. Mitch received a specialization in Entrepreneurship from the University of Maryland in 2015. Mitch is an alumnus of Leadership Custer County (2015) and Leadership Nebraska (2018).

Rotary statement on recent polio detections in U.S., Europe

The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York, USA, and isolates in several environmental samples collected in London are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere. It also highlights the importance of vaccination as the only form of protection against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases and the work that needs to be done in our communities to encourage the uptake of vaccines. Also, as the world gets closer to zero wild poliovirus cases, it is increasingly important to track all forms of the virus wherever they may appear, including in polio-free regions.

The U.S. is still considered low risk for paralytic outbreaks of polio due to the high level of vaccine coverage across the population. If a child has received the entire course of vaccines, the risk of becoming paralyzed by polio is negligible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 92.6% of children aged 24 months are fully vaccinated against polio, slightly below the 95% World Health Organization target. Flags are Up for 9/11 Tribute of Flags
Thanks to Rotarians and dedicated volunteers, almost 3,000 flags are up at Memorial Park for our 9/11 Tribute of flags. The attacks on September 11, 2001, killed 2,977 people. Each flag bears the name and age of a victim, the location of where they died and personal information. The flags of those who have a Nebraska connection are placed in a special section.
