Midwest Workforce Challenges and Solutions

Many Midwest organizations are facing significant workforce shortages. These issues are not new and will require a significant and coordinated effort to resolve. Workforce is discussed from 1950 until today to explain the various causes of the current shortages and then projections for the next two decades are discussed. A new approach to looking at the workforce is highlighted which includes key steps a company or community can take to help address their workforce needs.

Dr. Ron Cox is an aerospace engineer with a B.S. and Ph.D. from Iowa State University. His early career included work designing airfoils and fighter aircraft for a large defense contractor. Later he served as a C-level executive at a small manufacturer of cooling towers.

Ron was also an Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering professor at the University of Oklahoma. He conducted computational modeling research on hypersonic vehicles, taught undergraduate and graduate courses, and received the university's outstanding teacher award.

More recently, he served as the director of a business outreach unit, associate dean of corporate engagement, and assistant vice president of extension at Iowa State University. Part of his responsibilities included management of $40 million of grants and contracts supporting economic development activities.

Ron currently runs Midwest Workforce Strategies, a consulting company that helps organizations understand Midwest workforce challenges and design plans to grow their labor force.
Welcome New Rotarian Russell Vaughn
Introducing our new Rotarian, Russell Vaughn, whose roots extend from Rapid City, South Dakota to the vibrant community of Omaha, Nebraska, which he has proudly called home since 2016. With over a decade of dedicated service in the nonprofit sector, Russell's journey has taken him across borders, allowing him to both live and work on the global stage. However, in 2016, he embraced a transformative career shift, transitioning from nonprofit leadership to embark on a dynamic path in technology.

Today, Russell stands as the visionary Chief Growth Officer and a valued partner at Ascend Technology Group. In his role, he spearheads initiatives that cater to the unique needs of small to middle-market companies, providing them with cutting-edge managed IT solutions. Russell's commitment to excellence and his passion for fostering growth make him an invaluable addition to our Rotary family. We look forward to the remarkable contributions he will undoubtedly bring to our organization and the greater Omaha community.

Thank you to Brett Frevert for sponsoring Russell to Rotary.

Rotary Corporate Membership Launched
Just recently, a momentous event occurred as the Rotary Corporate Membership was officially inaugurated, a collaborative effort led by our esteemed Mayors and dedicated Rotarians, Hal Daub and Jim Suttle. This remarkable display of unity, made possible by Rotary, is unfolding right before our eyes.

With the two mayors joining forces for the noble cause of "service above self," there's an air of boundless potential. As they work hand in hand, there's an unwavering assurance that everything will ascend to new heights.

Jim and Hal extend a heartfelt invitation to their fellow Rotarians, urging them to join forces to recruit corporate members. In this initiative, corporations can nominate up to four individuals from their ranks to represent their company within Rotary.

If you have a specific company in mind or wish to explore this opportunity further, please don't hesitate to contact Jim and Hal. Your support and participation can help foster even greater positive change within our community through Rotary's shared values and mission. Together, we can make a difference that resonates far and wide.

For more information, please contact Hal Daub at hal.daub9@gmail.com or Jim Suttle at jim@jimsuttle.com.
