The Rotary Club of Kampala Central Refurbishes an Operating Theatre & Maternity Ward at Freda Carr Ngora Hospital

Located approximately 248kms from Hotel Africana, in the heart of Kampala city where the Rotary Club of Kampala Central meets weekly, Ngora is a beautiful small district in the far Eastern part of Uganda.

Like most areas across the country, women and children in Ngora have for long lacked‘better’ health care services.

A rural Private Not for Profit Hospital, Freda CarrNgora Hospital was founded in 1922 as a small medical mission with a donation from a one Mr. Ernest Carr in memory of his daughter Freda who had died in East Africa.

Today, 97 years later, Freda CarrNgoraHospital provides care to a population of more than 150,000 people directly and up to 250,000 people indirectly annually.

Maternal and Child Health are one of the 6 areas of focus where Rotary helps to protect and promote the health of a mother and the new born child.In Uganda, even though high-impact interventions are available, they are not reaching all of the women and newborns who need them especially those in rural districts.

This is now different for the mothers and babies in Ngora District as a result of the new project intervention by the Rotary Club of Kampala Central worth One Hundred and Ninety Two Thousand Dollars (USD192,000) donated to their community.

The Rotary Project involved the Refurbishment of the dilapidated structures that housed the Maternity Ward and Operating Theatre at the Hospital, provision of a 15,000 litre water tank to supply water to the Maternity Ward and Operating Theatre and reconstruction of the walkway between the Operating Theatre and Maternity Ward.

It also included provision of the following equipment to the facilities:
  • Delivery Beds
  • Examination Coaches,
  • Oxygen Concentrators,
  • Baby Incubators,
  • An Autoclave,
  • Operating Theatre Table (hydraulically adjusted),
  • Operating Lamp Ceiling Type,
  • Mobile Operating Lamp with Rechargeable Batteries (for emergency cases in case there is no power.
The project also had a component of emergency obstetric and neonatal training for the local nurses and midwives. A Vocational Training Team (VTT) from D1090 is scheduled to visit six times over the next three years. Over 300 nurses and midwives have been trained.

On 31st August 2019, The Rt. Hon Jacob Oulanyah Deputy Speaker Parliament of Uganda (who is also an honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Kampala Central and a Major Donor), commissioned the fully refurbished Operating Theatre and Maternity Ward. RtnCharles Lwanga Kiiza President Rotary Club of Kampala Central is grateful to all stakeholders that made this dream a reality. He urged Members of Rotary to continue giving to the Rotary Foundation.

It is expected that this project will lead to:
  1. Reduced the mortality and morbidity rate for children under the age of five;
  2. Reduced maternal mortality and morbidity rate;
  3. Improved access to essential medical services,
  4. Trained community health leaders and health care providers for mothers and their children;
  5. Disease prevention and treatment in infants and expectant mothers;
  6. Educational studies for career-minded professionals related to maternal and child health supported;
  7. Community development and economic empowerment enhanced.
