CHARLES RICHARD (DICK) BOWERS Rotary District 6760 Governor 2011-2012 Member, Brentwood Rotary Club, Brentwood, TN
Dick Bowers became a Rotarian in 1996, when he was asked to join the Maryville Rotary Club in District 6780 in East Tennessee. After serving in various Club leadership positions, and leading a Group Study Exchange Team to Brazil, he became President of the Maryville Club. In 2006, when Dick and his wife, Kay, moved to Nashville, he joined Brentwood Rotary and Kay joined the Nashville Club. From 2011-2012, Dick served as the District Governor for our District, 6760. Dick and Kay are Major Donors to the Rotary Foundation, members of the Bequest Society and of the Paul Harris Society.
Dick was born in Missouri, grew up near San Francisco, and studied political science, economics and international relations at U.C. Berkeley, earning BA and MA degrees cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. As a Russian linguist, Dick served in the U.S. Army in West Berlin at the height of the Cold War. In 1967 he became a career member of the U.S. diplomatic corps and served tours of duty in the American embassies in Panama, Poland, Singapore, Germany and Bolivia. He also served several tours in Washington, D.C., and from there traveled to over 75 counties on negotiating, fact-finding and trouble-shooting missions. In 1991, he was appointed by President George Herbert Walker Bush to be the United States Ambassador to Bolivia and served there from 1991 through 1994. He retired from the Foreign Service in 1995.
In addition to his passion for Rotary, and Rotary work trips to Honduras, Dick is an avid sportsman who enjoys hiking, mountaineering and backpacking. In 1996 he “thru-hiked” the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. He then began a quest to get to the highest point of each of our 50 states, which he completed in 2004. For several years now, Dick has been an ESL teacher, working with hundreds of adult, non-native English speakers in their quest to learn our language. In their blended family, Dick and Kay have five adult children, and 11 grandchildren.
