President's Message
Hello Rotarians,

I hope you enjoyed the weekend. Despite all the “storm” predictions, we ended up with nice weather for the weekend. I’ll take that kind of weather inaccuracy.

I was thinking that it would be nice if we could fill our speakers’ calendar with some member Classification Talks this year. The Classification Talk doesn't have to be the dread of new or old members.  Classification Talks are a mainstay of Rotary and help members build better relationships with each other.

The how-to of Rotary Classification Talks:  A “classification” describes the principal activity of the company or business with which a Rotarian is connected.  For example, a police officer could be classified as “law enforcement”, a school principal as “public education”.  The reason for classifications is to ensure a well-balanced club with members of many vocations.  One of Rotary’s four avenues of service is “vocational service”, by which we honor and respect the individual contributions to our community through our vocations.  New members are given an opportunity to share their vocation by giving a Classification Talk.

I would like to share the following guidelines with all members for giving a Classification Talk:
• State your name, where you currently work, and what you do there.
• Give a brief history of yourself.  This can include where you were born, childhood interests and family statistics, people that had an influence on you, major life events such as military service or travel, etc.
• Talk about your work history, training and education.  This can include why you chose your profession (or perhaps why it chose you).
• If desired, you can share your present hobbies, interests, values and beliefs.  This could include why you joined Rotary, what you hope to gain from it, and what you feel you can contribute.
• Finally, the best part, and it should take no more than 10-15 minutes: this is a great opportunity to share information about yourself.

I think it’s a good way for Rotarians to connect and get to know each other better. I hope you might be willing to give a Classification Talk, and if so, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Admin Chair Colleen Maynard. We will be pleased to book you into any of our lunch meetings.

This Wednesday, we are hosting former Rotarian Michael Gurtler. Most of us know Mike within the community; he will be giving us a talk regarding the Bar Harbor Charter Commission. Hope you can join us.
