Here I am again, having waited until the last minute to write the president’s message for the week. This is (I think) message number 7 of 52 for those of you who are counting. I am probably the only one counting, aren’t I? Don’t take that as a bad thing, I actually look forward to writing these messages and conveying my thoughts to you, no matter how random they may be. I can also tell you that, apparently, allergy season is already creeping in on us. I say that because I am one of those who must start sneezing as soon as the first allergen hits the air and won’t stop until snow is on the ground, or so it seems.
First, let me take a minute to recognize one of our very own Interactors. Technically, she is no longer an Interact member since she graduated from MDIHS this year, but she was, and her being a member of Interact shows how awesome she is and supports the award she was recently given. What award was that you say? And who the heck are you even talking about, you say? Well, I am talking about Brittany Corson, and I am speaking of the $1,000 scholarship that she was awarded by the Boston Red Sox recently. This scholarship is based upon community service and for more details I invite you to go to the link below and read the entire article for yourself.
I will take this opportunity to reaffirm how wonderful our Interact Club is! These “kids” do an incredible amount of community service (work) in our area and we, as a club, should be proud to support them, their advisors, and Rotary liaisons in any way we can!
Secondly, please allow me to remind you that this week is the District Governor’s visit to our club. I would love for you ALL to attend if only for the reasons I stated in last week’s Bulletin. If you didn’t read last week’s Bulletin, stop reading this one and go do so now, then come back and finish this one. If there is not enough food to feed everyone I have some unexpended money in the “District Governor’s Visit” budget and will take you out to lunch after.
Thirdly, a few messages ago I implored (okay, I didn’t beg or anything, but I did ask) upon you the need for fresh community service ideas for our club. As of yet, I have not heard any. So, now, I will implore again. If you have any ideas for community service or know of a need within our community (or nearby) please communicate them to me. My email is in Clubrunner and I am at almost every meeting. No idea is silly or stupid and any one of them could turn out to be a very important or needed project, so please let communicate them to me if you have them!
Lastly, I hope to see you on Wednesday! I truly do hope that you are there and I want you to know that I regret that when I arrive at Birch Bay every Wednesday I am almost always immediately overwhelmed with things to do and I do not have the opportunity to socialize with you all. Clarification; I do not regret being overwhelmed, that is part of my job as President, I do regret not being able to socialize. However, I am working on changing that by having more fellowship events where we, as a club, can meet and not work, not have to listen to anyone speak, but rather, relax, have some food and drink if you wish, and get to know each other better. There are so many people of interest in our club (all of you) and I can never learn it all, but I surely would like to know more about each and every one of you!

Fill a Boat
I began this event in September of 2013. My inspiration was my daughter in law, Trish Corliss, who was diagnosed with a rare type of Ovarian cancer at the age of 34 around three weeks after her first child, Gracie was born in February of 2012. She spent the first year of Gracie’s life having an ovary removed and all the terrible treatments to help her survive cancer, something a young new mother should not have to endure.
After that Trish started trying to Pay it Forward by establishing Team Joyful Hope for Stand up to Cancer. I desperately was trying to help from afar (they live in Indiana). I was talking to my customer, Gary Fagan, who owns Acadia Nature Cruises, and we shared stories of dealing with cancer. He then looked at me, and said directly, “Fill a Boat!” I did not know what he meant, so he said it again, but this time it was “Fill My Boat.” He offered his boat for free, which holds a hundred or so people for a two hour cruise, and all the money people paid went to Team Joyful Hope and Stand up to Cancer. Over the last three years we have been able to raise over $10,000.
Trish is now cancer free, and with the help of one healthy ovary gave birth to my 4th and youngest granddaughter, Ellie in November. They all are coming to Maine in September to cruise Frenchman Bay on September 18th for the 4th annual Fill A Boat. I could use help; from Rotarians mostly by attending and/or helping prepare small platters of finger foods. The time is 4-8 on a Sunday afternoon, and there is a requested donation of $25.
This may be my last year of doing this, but it has been hugely fun and well supported. I am deeply grateful to everyone who can or has helped. The attached picture shows some of our Rotary members and the families…Martha Abbot, the Wrobel family, Scott and Debbie Hammond, and I believe Dean and Penny Read. The four offices that I am affiliated with all pay for their employees and spouses, which amounts to around 30+people. As I said the boat holds 100, and it does not seem fair to Acadia Nature Cruises if I don’t get the boat filled!
This year the cruise has even more meaning to me as I lost my younger to a very fast moving aggressive cancer in June.
