My apologies for not delivering last week’s Bulletin. Our secretary, Martha Abbott, does a terrific job assembling the Bulletin, but she was out of town on business. She’s back now, and here we go again.
A few exciting things have happened lately in our club. We managed a water and fluids station and cheered on all the runners in the MDI Marathon on October 20th. Thanks to Josh Yarbrough, Sally Boggs, Dean Read, Michael Madell and Jennifer Literall for volunteering and doing a great job. Also, last Thursday Oct 24th was Polio Day. Rotarians were spread out around town, raising awareness for Polio and the eradication of the disease. Thanks again to Judith Swazey, Lee Bonta, Joanna Clarke, Aurora Hilton, Scott Hammond and Stefanie Joy Muscat for all your time and effort to make this possible; and thanks to all the Rotarians who stopped by to make a donation as well as the establishments that collaborated with us: Sherman’s Book Store, Spruce and Gussy, and Pat’s Pizza in Bar Harbor.
That very same day (World Polio Day), Rotary and its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners announced that wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) has been eradicated worldwide. WPV3 is only the third infectious human disease-causing pathogen to be eradicated in history, following smallpox and wild poliovirus type 2. This achievement means that two of the three wild polio strains have now been wiped out, an important marker of progress against the disease. I think we can say we had a successful day worldwide on Polio Day.
It’s almost 5 months into my Presidency, and I believe that as a club we are doing great. The enthusiasm, the volunteerism, and the kindness in this club are tremendous. In club administration, we have our speakers lined up for the rest of this year and are starting to fill in January. We have made a few donations and are looking to do more before the end of December. In membership, we have gained three new members, and with your help, we can increase that still. Public Image is doing well providing a positive image for our club. Service projects are booming (hoping to do one more before the holidays), and Foundation has done well with the grant for the wheelchair project next year and Polio Day. All this is due to all of your contributions of time and effort and the wonderful Board of Directors I have. Thank you everyone.
