There was strong attendance at our Veteran’s Day meeting last Wednesday. Chef Pasha dazzled our taste buds with a culinary experience from New Orleans. We dined on peaches, andouille sausage, red beans and rice, shrimp etouffe and topped it off with pecan pie!!
There will be a Rotary Foundation Seminar on November 21, 2015. The seminar will be held at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville from 10 am to 3 pm, lunch will be provided.
Judy Swazey reminded us that our Club is responsible for covering December hours at The BH Food Pantry, please check your schedule and see Judy to sign up to cover a shift or two.

Our Holiday Party will be on December 2, 2015 at Geddy’s at 5:00 pm. We will continue the tradition of the annual auction. Please bring your auction items to Gina or drop them off with Annette at the ferry terminal.

"FILL A Boat” event for Stand up to Cancer is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 4PM at the dock of the Atlantic Oceanside, Acadia Nature Cruises.
Anyone who wants to go should contact me at nancy@lynaminsurance.com or by phone at 288-3334. It is a $25 suggested donation. It is not a Rotary event, but Rotary has always supported it. This is the third year, and I hope to have raised over $10,000 after this event.

Over the recent few weeks, I coordinated with Pastor Rob Benson to arrange for Rotarian packers to load backpacks for the Bar Harbor Congregational Church Backpack Project.
PR Chair Carrie Jones and myself will be meeting with Amy Schwartz to discuss increased Rotary involvement in the Park Street Playground project later this week.
I will be meeting with a local community service provider to discuss the possibility of providing service only (manpower) resources for the building of a handicap accessibility ramp.
On September 2nd, Rotarians Dick Fox, Carrie Jones and myself joined with Charlie Wilcomb of the YMCA to rearrange and organize the Bangor Hydro building.
The Service Committee continued its involvement with the Bar Harbor Kids Book Festival at a bi-weekly board meeting on September 4th, represented by Rotarians Melinda Rice, Maryanne Mattson, Doreen Willett, Steve Boucher, Carrie Jones and myself. In addition, I submitted its 501c3 application. Thank you to the following Rotarians for working the Book Festival fundraising booth for the Bar Harbor Art Walk on September 4th. Timberland Acres RV Park is hosting the Recreational Vehicle Fellowship of Rotarians, N.A. The group will be staying at the park from September 10-14 and touring the area.
As part of their itinerary, they will have a lobster dinner on Friday, September 11th at 6:00 pm and have asked that local Rotary club members come and join them. "Attitude Adjustment" starts at 5:00 pm. Dinner consists of clam chowder, lobster, baked potato, cole slaw, roll, blueberry pie, coffee and iced tea. The cost of the dinner is $30.
David Wells and Annette Higgins will be doing a presentation on the Panama Wheel Chair project for the group.
Although 54% of our members are women, before 1989 it would have been zero!
Until 1989 the Constitution and Bylaws of Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males only. In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women to become members. The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against RI claiming a violation of a state civil rights law that prevents discrimination of any form in business establishments or public accommodations.
The appeals court and the California Supreme Court supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club's charter merely for inducting women into the club. The United States Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do have a "business purpose" and are in some ways public-type organizations. This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction having similar "public accommodation" statutes.
The RI constitutional change was made at the 1989 Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision for all of Rotary. Since that time, women have become members and leaders of clubs and districts throughout the world.
Rotary President K.R. Ravindran has named six Rotary Global Women of Action for 2015. The honorees were chosen for their dedication and service, which has improved the lives of thousands around the world.
“Every day at Rotary I see firsthand how our members work to change lives and make a significant impact,” said Ravindran. “Rotary’s Global Women of Action embody Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.”
The women will be honored at Rotary Day at the United Nations in New York City on 7 November. They will address attendees and lead discussions on various topics related to their work.

This is an opportunity to showcase your club or district project, recruit members for your Rotary Fellowship, share information about your Rotarian Action Group, or market Rotary merchandise if you are a licensed RI vendor.
The application deadline is 30 September. Booth allocations will be awarded by 1 November.

When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation.
