Sleepless in Bar Harbor

If there are two things that I rarely, and I mean RARELY, have any problem doing, they are eating and sleeping. I had no trouble eating today, I did manage to have dinner and then a couple of hours later, “second dinner.” My trouble right now is sleeping. Before any of you think you know what the problem is, let me stop you now, and tell you that my difficulty sleeping has nothing whatsoever to do with having eaten two dinners! That is normal. Being awake at 12:20 in the morning, on a Sunday night, well, really it is Monday morning, writing the bulletin message, is far from normal. For me!

Why am I awake then? I know why I am awake and I will not bore you with those details, but I will share with you some of the thoughts that I had while I was attempting to fall asleep. That would be prior to getting out of bed and trying to write this mess.

The Walking Dead. I don’t know how many of you watch this show, but I swear that I have given it up after watching this season opening episode. No, it was not too violent for me, in fact it was not violent enough for me. What is irritating me about the whole thing is that the writers have totally written out all of the powerful and strong aspects of human personality. The main protagonist, Rick had many, many opportunities to end that saga before the episode was half over and the only reason he did not was because then the writers would not be able to milk Negan’s evil for an entire season. I can only suspend my disbelief for so long and so far! If you do not watch the Walking Dead, I apologize and I know that you have no idea to what I am referring. However, you can rejoice in the fact that you now have a new “non-watcher” in your ranks. And, in positive news, here’s a quick update on Rotary business.

The Bar Harbor Kids Book Festival. I only thought about this long enough to be happy that it is over for the year and Carrie can relax a bit. However, I do want to heartily and enthusiastically thank those who are Board members and those who volunteered for making it another successful year! Without ether the planners or the workers, nothing can become reality.

The Rotary Leadership Institute. I took a quick hiatus from this paragraph to send an all Club email about this subject. If you read the email, you can skip this paragraph. Well, you can probably skip this paragraph anyway, but at least the time stamp on the email that I just sent validates the time that I am writing this bulletin. No people, I am not that crafty, it really is 12:53a.m.

The noon time meeting this Wednesday, October 26th. This will be a club assembly and the Past Presidents Committee, or a representative thereof, will be presenting the slate of nominees for next year’s Board and the 2017-2018 Presidential Nominee. This is a very important meeting which will serve as the backbone for a November meeting during which the Club will vote on said nominees and any others presented by club members. Please attend if you are available!

The evening meeting on November 2nd. This will be a slightly different and, most likely, exceptionally fun evening meeting. It will be held at the Seal Cove Auto Museum. The Museum will host us and we will have a meeting with no agenda and no work scheduled. The Club, which in this case means me, will provide the snacks and beverages, and all you have to do is show up, socialize and admire the beautiful motor (and some without motors) vehicles which are on display.
What's Happening

November is Rotary Foundation month.  We will be hearing in a couple of weeks from Foundation Committee Chair, Pete Nicholson, but until then, here are a few fact about YOUR foundation.

In 2016-17, our Rotary Foundation turns 100. That’s a century of Rotary members changing lives and improving communities all over the world. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.

Through our Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, provide basic education, and grow local economies. We’ve also been a leader in the fight to eradicate polio worldwide.

The centennial is the perfect time to share this impressive record with the world. Join us in making sure that every Rotary member and people in every community know about the vital work of Rotary and its Foundation.

Lessons in Rotary Geography

. Were you aware that the Rotary Club of Reno, Nevada, is farther west than the Rotary Club of Los Angeles, California?

. Would you guess that the meetings of the Rotary Club of Portland, Maine, are farther south than those of the clubs in London, England?

. Can you imagine that the Rotary Club of Pensacola, Florida, is west of the Detroit, Michigan, club?

. It's a fact that the Rotary Club of Cairo, Illinois, is south of Richmond, Virginia.

. There are 135 Rotary clubs with the word "Tokyo" in their club names.

. The Rotary Club of Nome, Alaska, lies west of the club in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Santiago, Chile, club is located east of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

. Rotary geographers will know that virtually every Rotary club meeting in Australia is east of the Hong Kong Rotary Club.

. What do the Rotary clubs of Quito, Ecuador; Libreville, Gabon, Singapore, and Kampala, Uganda, have in common? You guessed right if you said they all meet approximately on the equator.

At this year’s World Polio Day celebration in Atlanta, Rotary is harnessing the power of virtual reality technology to build empathy and inspire action in our fight to eradicate polio. Rotary, with support from the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, produced a virtual reality film that tells the story of Alokita, a young adult who suffered paralysis from polio as a child growing up in India, which has been polio-free since 2011. “When you open your eyes and see a different environment around you, you relate to the subject on a visceral, personal level,” says Vincent Vernet, direct of digital and...

From the United Nations’ earliest days in the aftermath of World War II, the organization’s humanitarian mission has always dovetailed with Rotary’s efforts to administer aid and build peace. This year’s Rotary Day at the United Nations, 12 November, will highlight the role businesses can play in that collaboration as we work toward a more just and equitable world. The theme of this year’s gathering at UN headquarters in New York City, “Responsible Business, Resilient Societies,” recognizes Rotary’s role at the intersection of commerce and cause. As leaders in their professions and...

Today marked the start of the battle to take control of Mosul back from the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. The city is the group's last major stronghold in Iraq. But humanitarian aid agencies have known about the military offensive, giving them an unusual opportunity to prepare for the crisis. "It is rare for the world to get early warning of a vast human catastrophe," says Chris Warham, chief executive of ShelterBox. "The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees issued a paper in July saying this would likely be the biggest humanitarian crisis of the year — and we better get...
