President's Message
Shaun Farrar
member photo
I will begin this message by promising you that it will be short and you will not have to read a longwinded diatribe today. Trust me, there is a reason for this or I would definitely be typing more. Carrie and I are currently in Quebec so that she can do some research for an upcoming book, and not being incredibly wealthy, we chose one of the cheaper hotels in Old Quebec. It is, by most definitions, a very nice hotel. However, the internet is greatly lacking and all of my online business this morning has been done while standing in the hallway, or in the open doorway of our room.

So, let me wish you all a wonderful week full of happiness and joy. Whatever brings you joy (although I truly hope it is kind), may there be plenty of it in your life! As I said at last week’s meeting, I will not be present for the evening meeting this week and it will be presided over by President-Elect Steve Boucher. The meeting will be held in the second floor dining room at Cherrystone’s Restaurant, a nice location where we have met at least once before. I will miss being there and hope it is a fun meeting full of fellowship.

For fans of NCIS (or any similar "cop" show), BOLO (which for the uninitiated means Be On the Lookout) for a survey that we need to assess your Rotary club committee involvement and/or interest.  You will have an opportunity to share with the Board, just what committee(s) on which you are presently serving; or, perhaps more important, on which you would like to serve for the 2016-17 program year.  Pay particular attention to the subcommittees/functions of the 5 standing committees to express your expertise and/or interest in the comments block at the end.  The survey should take less than 5 minutes, so please open it and respond.

From Rotary International
From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Quilts may be utilitarian objects, but Rod Buffington’s “quilt paintings” – watercolors on paper that are then covered with small bits of fabric – are geometrics where mathematics and whimsy intersect. Buffington, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ill., didn’t come up with this unusual method overnight. His voilà moment came as he beheld the mesmerizing quilts made by his grandmother, who lived to 104 and continued her craft until she was 98. To create his works, Buffington lays cotton fabric over paintings he has created, then hand-...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Steven Goldsmith is a mediation and training leader with Mediators Beyond Borders International, an organization that develops local skills for peace building and conflict resolution around the world. Goldsmith was among 150 experts and leaders who gathered at a Rotary presidential conference in Ontario, Calif., to discuss issues related to resolving conflicts and reducing violence. More than 1,500 people attended the conference, the first of five hosted this year by 2015-16 Rotary President K.R. Ravindran and Foundation Trustee Chair Ray...
