At the invitation from President Shaun, this is my guest recollection column from the past 20 years and the changes I have seen since 1997.
The size of the club was about the same as it is today; but the composition is markedly different. In 1997 only 22% of the membership was female. Today that is 49%. In 1995 the club elected Pat Curtis as the first female president. Over the past 12 years, half of the club presents have been female.
Of the approximate 70 members of the club in 1997, only 18 remain today. While it may be that we are "not getting nay younger," (only 16 are under age 50), it is clear that younger members are stepping up to leadership positions.
Our focus of service has changed as well. When I joined the club in 1997 it was very insular -- focused within the borders of MDI and substantially "checkbook charity." Since then we have been to Los Chillos, Ecuador, Jambanjelly, Gambia, Panama, Belize and Costa Rica.
In 1997 there was no Interact club. Today MDI High School students are doing everything from painting to visiting the UN -- too much to detail here.
The deadline for nominations was last Friday. I have only one nomination in process. We are extending the deadline to Friday, April 21. If we do not have a selection on good nominations, the Admin Committee and Board may opt not to award a NRPHF this year. If you have a nomination in mind, please complete the nomination form and email or deliver it to me on or before this Friday.
Most Rotarians know, but newer members may not, that we honor a non-Rotarian with a Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) each year. The PHF is Rotary's highest honor. Members may nominate a person who is not now, nor has ever been, a Rotarian, but exhibits the traits of a true Rotarian by having made significant contributions to our community outside his/her employed position.
The criteria and nomination form are attached. You may make a nomination by completing the nomination form and delivering it to me no later than Friday, April 14, 2016. A list of past recipients can be found in the Community Awards section on our home page.
The Admin Committee will review the nominations and make a recommendation to the Board which will make the final decision. The award will be presented at our annual dinner in June.
The MDI High School Interact Club will be showing a movie and having a speaker about human trafficking on May 16 at 7 p.m. at the high school’s theater. More details will be coming, but let’s support our amazing high school counterparts and attend! All the proceeds raised will go to Project Starfish, which uses the money to directly help survivors of trafficking.
