It’s almost August, and nearly a month complete in my term as President. In nearly three weeks, we have accomplished a lot as a club. We had our biggest fundraiser of the year with a profit of nearly $40,000. We hosted our District Governor right after the 4th of July; we recognized our own Lisa Horsch Clark as a valuable member of the community; we inducted two members: Lucas Dunbar and Dana Fadley; we had the participation of some Rotarians in a community service project; and, not to mention, the great speakers our club has had the pleasure of hosting. And there’s even more to come.
As a club, we should feel proud of all of our accomplishments. Every year, we participate in Polio Day, the Bed Races, the Adventure Golf Tournament, the Seafood Festival/Pancake Breakfast, the Food Pantry, the Backpack Program, FOA Earth Day Clean-up, RYLA, and much more. These are good accomplishments for our club, and hopefully we can do even more this year.
I had the opportunity to spend the entire day with my husband last Friday in the Camden/Rockland area. Our schedules are busy and don’t coincide very often, but finally we had that date. While in Camden, I ran into Bob Fillow, a member of the Camden Rotary Club. He was on the sidewalk in front of a co-op store selling raffle tickets to benefit the Camden Rotary club’s non-profit outreach programs in Knox County. I introduced myself, and it was an instant connection. We had a nice conversation aided by a shared common interest: ROTARY, and what Rotary means to each of us. We even had time to pose for a picture (below).
I like fellowships, and if you like them, too, or would like to belong to one, there are a lot of opportunities throughout Rotary. For more information visit:

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)
September is when we give out the Rotary Young Leadership Award, RYLA. Every year the club sponsors a member of the club or someone within the community between the ages of 21-35 to experience a life changing program that will help this young individual to:
- Develop leadership skills
- Increase self-confidence & self-esteem
- Meet community leaders and mentors
- Gain exposure to a variety of issues and people
And most importantly MAKE LIFELONG MEMORIES.
Registration is due by August 30th. For more information, contact
Aurora Hilton, RYLA chairperson.
I found a very interesting article in the Rotarian (Rotary magazine) that talks about the beginning of this fabulous program and want to share it with all of you:
“Each summer thousands of young people are selected to attend Rotary-sponsored leadership camps or seminars in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, France, Argentina, Korea and numerous other countries. In an informal out-of-doors atmosphere, 50 to 75 outstanding young men and/or women spend a week in a challenging program of discussions, inspirational addresses, leadership training and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship. The official name of this activity is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program (RYLA), although the event is occasionally referred to as Camp Royal, Camp Enterprise, Youth Leaders Seminars, Youth Conferences or other terms.
The RYLA program began in Australia in 1959, when young people throughout the state of Queensland were selected to meet with Princess Alexandra, the young cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted the participants, were impressed with the quality of the young leaders. It was decided to bring youth leaders together each year for a week of social, cultural and educational activities. The RYLA program gradually grew throughout all the Rotary districts of Australia and New Zealand. In 1971, the RI Board of Directors adopted RYLA as an official program of Rotary International.”
