Meeting Recap July 8, 2015

We had a record turnout for our noon time meeting on Wednesday! I think the GREAT weather, our guest speaker and the fact that ALL the Snow Birds have landed helped to bring a big crowd!

Ron kicked the meeting off with a SUPER report about July 4^th. We hit an ALL TIME high take of $37,000. This reflects a 7.2% increase over record breaking totals from last year!! Thank you again to Ron for organizing and executing what came off as a flawless event. I would also like to extend my thanks to all the Club Members, Interact Members and Volunteers for countless hours of work. This event would not happen as it does every year if it weren’t for all your hard work! WELL DONE!

Maryanne shared with us how well the Interact Club is doing with the calendar program which is a fundraiser for the kids to go to New York for the UN/Rotary day in November. The Club decided not to do a clothing swap and will instead be selling pizza after school at the High School.

Dean announced that he would be needing help to reframe the Hydro Building door that was damaged on the 4^th. Please contact Dean for details.

Our very distinguished guest was District Governor Al Feather. Al started his presentation by awarding 2 community members a very special “Be a Gift to the World” award. The non-Club recipient was Fire Chief Matt Bartlett, the Club recipient was Maryanne Mattson. Congratulations to them both!

Al presented his goals for the 2015-2016 Rotary Year. It is hard not to get excited about the coming year as Al’s enthusiasm is quite contagious! He also shared a slide show about the District Water and Sanitation Project in Nicaragua. Al finished with a clip about the District Conference which will be at Sugarloaf this year.

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

OUR ONGOING COMMITMENT

Rotarians have not only been present for major events in history—we’ve been a part of them. From the beginning, three key traits have remained strong throughout Rotary:

We’re truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Today we’re working together from around the globe both digitally and in-person to solve some of our world’s most challenging problems.

We persevere in tough times. During WWII, Rotary clubs in Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, and Japan were forced to disband. Despite the risks, many continued to meet informally and following the war’s end, Rotary members joined together to rebuild their clubs and their countries.

Our commitment to service is ongoing. We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. By 2012, only three countries remain polio-endemic—down from 125 in 1988.

Illiteracy traps adults, and their families, in poverty
Around the world, millions of adults are unable to read or write, and therefore struggle to earn a living for themselves and their families. Even in the United States, with its considerable resources, there are 36 million adults who can’t read better than the average third-grader, according to the international nonprofit ProLiteracy. In Detroit, Michigan, a widely cited 2003 survey conducted by the National Institute for Literacy found that almost half of residents over age 16 were functionally illiterate -- unable to use reading, speaking, writing, and computer skills in everyday life....
