We have quite a few events coming up and while some of them may seem far off, the dates will be here before we know it. So, I thought that I would give everyone a heads up on some volunteer needs. You know you want to participate and help the causes!
Membership Recruiting -- Wednesday, April 5, 5:00 pm . This is a very special meeting put together by the Membership and Administration Committees. This meeting will be a fellowship meeting with a focus on familiarizing non-Rotarians with what Rotary is all about. The meeting will be at the Jesup Memorial Library, starting at 5 p.m. Since the point of the meeting is community familiarization of Rotary, all members are urged to bring a non-Rotarian guest. Those members who do bring a guest will be exempt from paying the $5.00 evening meeting fee.
Annual Friend’s of Acadia Earth Day Roadside Cleanup -- Tuesday, April 29, 8:30 am until 11:30 am. This is the 18th annual event. This is usually a fun event and sometimes you find some interesting trash. If you would like to get some fresh air and help clean up the entryway to our beautiful island, please get in touch with Sharon Broom.
District 7790 Conference -- Friday, May 19, 10 am until Sunday May 21 at 10 am in Saguenay Canada. The conference is being held at the Hotel Delta Saguenay. It is quite a long commute to get to this location, so, for anyone who would like to go but doesn’t want to drive, Annette Higgins has chartered a bus and driver to do the driving while you get to visit with Rotarians from all over Maine. Contact Annette for more info.
Adventure Golf Tournament -- Saturday, May 20 at Pirate’s Cove. This will be our Club’s very own annual fundraiser. Many of you already know what a fun event this is to participate in, but, in addition, it is also a fun fundraiser to volunteer for. If you would like to play, volunteer, donate or any combination thereof, please see Pete Nicholson.
Rotary International Conference -- Saturday, June 10 through Wednesday, June 14 in Atlanta Georgia. While there may be some volunteer opportunities for you here, I know nothing about them. I am not selling that here, but rather, your attendance. This is a remarkable opportunity to attend an event that not many Rotarians attend. Plus, it is in the United States, not too far from where we live. I would urge you to not miss this one if you can help it.
Seafood Festival Fundraiser -- setup Monday, July 3 and from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm Tuesday, July 4. Not so long after the RI International Conference is our fabulous Fourth of July celebration and fundraiser. Most of us participate in this event and I think our goal for this year should be 100% membership participation. There are many, many volunteer opportunities for this event, both before, during and after the actual event. When you decide to help please see Ron Wrobel or Joe Losquadro for more details on needs.
Parade Float. In addition, if you want to help with something a little different, and oftentimes very fun, tasks, you can help decorate the Club’s parade float or help repaint some of our old signage, both for the event and the float. For either of these tasks, please see Carrie Jones.
Interact project. Carrie also has two other fun events that are in the beginning stages of planning that will require some volunteers. One is an Interact project which would be another fundraiser with proceeds going to an organization that fights human trafficking. Part of this project will be a showing of the movie “Sold” (which we showed at the Criterion Theatre last year) but it will be shown in the MDI High School Auditorium this time. This will be an Interact project but they will need some Rotarians to help with the event. Contact Carrie.
Criterion Theatre maintenance. The second event, which is in the very early stages of planning, but may happen soon if planning is fruitful, involves the Criterion Theatre. The theater has a “green room” where performers stay when not on stage. This room is currently not very conducive to relaxation and preparation for a live event. The plan is to paint the interior of the room (hopefully this will involve both Rotary and Interact members) and possibly donate a little money for sprucing up more of the room. If you would like to help with this project or the human trafficking fundraiser, please see Carrie.
One last but very important thing, this Wednesday, at our lunch meeting, Scott Hammond and Annette Higgins will be doing a presentation on this year’s wheelchair project which took place in Costa Rica.
I know you all are feeling drawn to volunteer, so don’t let anything keep you from doing so!
Volunteers Needed for a Friends of Acadia Community Volunteer Project
Saturday, April 29, 2017 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Join friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers for the 18th annual Earth Day Roadside Cleanup, to collect a winter’s worth of trash from roadsides on MDI and Trenton. Always the last Saturday in April, it’s a great day to take pride in your community, get outside, and celebrate spring, FOA-style!
Volunteers Needed for the Fourth of July Parade Float!
Please help plan and create the Rotary float for this year’s parade. Believe me, we need all the help we can get. Please contact Carrie at carriejonesbooks@gmail.com if you’d like to be involved in any way.

Are you good with a paint brush? Our signs need some help. Please contact Carrie at carriejonesbooks@gmail.com
When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia.
“I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...
Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...
The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends.
Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...
