Remote Meetings
Bar Harbor, ME United States of America
Due to the pandemic, we are currently meeting via Zoom. Join us on Wednesdays at Noon, except for the first Wednesday of the month when we meet at 5:00 pm (check Facebook or the speakers list on this page for the topics presented).
This Wednesday at Noon we will be joined by Ken Olson, who will be discussing Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. We will learn about “Maine’s new, battled-over National Monument which, like Baxter Park and Acadia, sprang full-blown from private philanthropy, a term meaning love of humankind in general.”
Ken Olson, retired President and CEO of Friends of Acadia, was Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy of Connecticut, President of American Rivers (Washington, DC), Director of Special Projects at The Conservation Fund (Arlington, VA) and, early in his career, head of the Appalachian Mountain Club Hut System in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest. Ken holds degrees from the University of Maine and Yale and in 2006 was awarded an honorary degree from College of the Atlantic for “outstanding contributions to human ecology.”
Also, in 2006, National Park Service Director Fran Mainella honored Ken with a Certificate of Appreciation for “exceptional leadership of Friends of Acadia [and] many significant achievements in the field of conservation [that] have greatly benefited the… Park Service and Acadia National Park.” He was named an Honorary Park Ranger by Acadia National Park, received a Resolution by Acclamation from the congressionally established Acadia Commission, and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Natural Resources Council of Maine. Ken has also written numerous books, and opinion pieces which have appeared in New York Times, Washington Post, L.A. Times and elsewhere.
In 2017, Ken joined the Board of Directors of the newly formed Friends of Katahdin Woods and Waters, which works to preserve and protect the outstanding natural beauty, ecological vitality and distinctive cultural resources of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and surrounding communities for the inspiration and enjoyment of all generations. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is a U.S. National Monument spanning 87,563 acres of mountains and forestland in northern Penobscot County, Maine, including a section of the East Branch Penobscot River. The monument is located on the eastern border of Maine's Baxter State Park.
I hope you will join us on Wednesday, for what will undoubtedly be an engaging and informative discussion! Please watch your email for Zoom details.
Finally, a reminder that we would like to add a section to our Bulletin with member news. Since we are not able to be together in person, many life events can pass without support or celebration. If you have news about yourself (or a fellow Rotarian) that you wish to share, please email me at stefanie@skogcottage.com. Martha and I will make sure it is shared in the next Bulletin.
