Changing Times

You know, times, they are a changin’!

This is such a very true and multi-faceted statement of late, with many things happening around us, some of which seem to be happening at an amazingly fast pace. Not all changes are good, nor do all changes occur at this blazing speed. Take Rotary for example. Rotary International has taken an incredibly long time to realize that the Rotary model is outdated and does not meet the needs or requirements of many of today’s younger generations. People who make up the potential membership pool are often times too busy for weekly meetings at a set time of day, yet these same people are starving for an outlet to serve their community. These busy people longing to do good are most often the best potential membership candidates for Rotary clubs. Rotary International has recognized this fact, and many other facets of the organization, and has recently taken steps to improve its ability to maintain and grow the membership worldwide.

This Wednesday, Joe Losquadro will be facilitating our club assembly and going over some potential changes to our Rotary Constitution and our club’s Bylaws. The vast majority of these changes have to do with membership and attendance. Joe will be presenting options to you as a club and you will have the opportunity to voice your opinions and ideas, all constructive and productive, I am sure.

Unfortunately, not a single one of us will live forever. I know that many of you have put a lot of time and effort into creating and maintaining a thriving and very fruitful club and I am so grateful for your years of thought and effort. It would be a shame to not take this opportunity to help ensure that what has been built can be retooled a bit for a better fit with the future. Consider it a part of your humanitarian legacy and make sure that you attend Wednesday’s lunchtime meeting and participate in bettering our Rotary Club!

What's Happening
Constitution & Bylaws

I am sure you have heard the phrase, "there's an app for that."  Well, for Rotary International to structure 1.2 million members in more than 35,000 clubs worldwide, "there are guiding documents for that."  The Manual of Procedure (known as the MOP) promulgates everything you need to know about being a Rotary Club.

And within the MOP is a Standard Club Constitution that all of the 35,000 clubs must adopt. In the most recent issue of the MOP, RI has granted significant latitude to clubs in exempting themselves from certain requirements -- most notably, (1) the frequency of meetings, (2) attendance requirements and (3) forms of membership.

The Board of Directors has developed some thoughts on how we should adopt those exemptions; but, before offering a revised set of Bylaws they are interested in what YOU think.  So, our meeting this week will be about just that.  First we will review the revised Club Constitution, which the Board has approved and which the club must adopt.  Then we will explore alternatives open to us to exempt those several requirements in the constitution.

Please attend and contribute your thoughts.

Rotary Happenings
When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...

The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...
