Rotarians,
It was nice to see some of you at the annual holiday party last Wednesday. What a great time we had with the added benefit of raising money for the food pantries of MDI. I got the results from our treasurer Ron Wrobel, and we raised $690.00 that night. The club will round it up to $1000 and will give $500.00 to each food pantry!
Thanks to the Rotarians who donated items for the auction: Lisa Horsch Clark, Scott Hammond, Dick and Barbara Fox, Dean Read, Jim Ash, Aurora Hilton, Christopher White, Ron Wrobel, Joanna Robinson Clarke, Martha Abbott, Liz Cutler and Jeff Miller. Also to all the businesses and organizations around MDI: My Maine Darling Boutique, Queen Anne’s Flower Shop, Spruce and Gussy, Destination Health, Sherman’s Bookstore and Stationery, Floret, The Kimball Shop, Shaw’s Jewelry, Swallowfield, The Abbe Museum, Reel Pizza Cinema and The Criterion Theatre. A huge thank you to Brian Smith from McKay’s and his staff; they did a great job with the appetizers and service provided. Without your support for this annual event, we couldn’t have done it. Good job everyone!
Interact Club Donations
The Interact Club is collecting items to fill the stockings of identified 12-17 year old students in need over the holidays. Some of the items they are asking for include hygiene and hair products, lotions, deodorants, school supplies, socks, mittens, scarves, gloves, fun mini toys, silly putty, fidget spinners, etc. If you plan to make a donation, please contact
Aurora Hilton, our Interact liaison, or
me. They will be collecting the items through Monday, December 16th.
December is Rotary Disease Prevention and Treatment month.
Rotary is dedicated to fighting and preventing disease. Disease Prevention and Treatment is one of Rotary’s Six Area of Focus. Disease and illness result in pain and injury. Prolonged severe illness may result in loss of employment and income. It affects families. It affects quality of life. There are more than a dozen Rotarian Action Groups (RAGs) committed to disease prevention and treatment. A list of RAGs may be found
at this website, and here are four of the many RAGs that address health issues:
·
Alzheimer's/Dementia RAG - They provide information and support to Rotarians on dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Members use their knowledge, experience and leadership to fight Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
·
RAG for Diabetes - This RAG provides commitment to education, identification, and treatment of diabetes. They are especially concerned with diabetes among children in developing countries. They work with the International Diabetes Federation.
Do you have a passion in one of these areas? Can you contribute your knowledge, skills, and expertise to one of these RAGs? Check it out today. This is another way in which we can serve as Rotarians in the focused area of Disease Prevention and Treatment.
