When it comes to international service, we tend to talk a lot about Rotary International’s fight to eradicate polio, which is so important. And we all know that Rotary helps in big and small ways in our local community.
However, Rotary does a lot more internationally than just fight polio and our club and every member is a part of that when we pay our dues. Our dues to the district and Rotary International are part of the $9.2 million dollars that Rotary spent last year to “help grow local economies and reduce poverty.”
One of the big focuses of Rotarians is stopping illiteracy. Over 775 million people older than 15 are illiterate. Locally, we’ve been trying to increase a love of books and literacy through past projects like the Bar Harbor Kids Book Festival and future projects such as the Story Trail Project and Little Free Libraries project.
As those projects (and our anti-bullying projects) start to speed up after the holidays, I hope that you’ll be a part of making a difference locally, helping kids and adults.
I’m with my daughter, Emily, in Fort Benning for Veteran’s Day and I want to extend a thank you to all our members who have served in the military. I appreciate your commitment and service.
