Paint the Town Purple for World Polio Day was a huge success yesterday, October 24. Businesses are still counting money, but we have raised $873.02 so far with 3 businesses still needing to report in with their proceeds. We will definitely make our goal of $1,000. Thank you to all who worked hard to make it happen and who made gifts. And big thank yous to The Thirsty Whale, Siam Orchid, Acadia Perk, Jordan’s, Acadia Corporation, Acadia Outdoor Center, and the Acadia Trail Sign Company for having proceeds programs to support our work with PolioPlus.
On the horizon…
PDG Lincoln Ehrlenbach will be with us this week as we discuss Rotary District Grants at lunch on Wednesday at the Atlantic Oceanside.
Coming up, we have 3 meetings in November – an evening social at Pat’s Pizza (inside) and two lunch meetings. The first will feature the Schoodic Institute, and the next will be our Annual Meeting where we will vote on the 2022-23 slate of officers for our club and take care of other club business. I would also like to have a MDI/Bar Harbor Club 101 session where people can ask questions about our past (why we do certain things) and what we want to do for the next club year (think Seafood Festival, golf, etc.).
We also have two service opportunities coming up. The first is this Saturday, October 30 at 8:30 a.m. when we will be trashy in Bar Harbor, picking up trash on Route 3. Please wear a Rotary shirt, meet on the corner of West and Route 3 (close to La Rochelle) and we will walk up to COA and back. If we have time, we will then walk down Cottage to Rodick. There seems to be trash on many of the downtown streets. Ninah from the paper might join us since this is a passion area of hers, and she is writing a story for the paper.
The second service opportunity is on Saturday, November 6 when we will form a Rotary team for Take Pride in Acadia Day. Work starts at 8:30 a.m. and will go until noon. For those who are interested, please send me an email, and I will register you and send you details with location, parking, etc.

Join us for our upcoming webinar with Oxtiec on Genetically Modified Mosquitoes and the Future of Mosquito Control on Nov. 4, 2021 at 9 am PDT. This event will provide an overview of Oxitec’s work, particularly the Oxitec Mosquito Project, a groundbreaking experiment which released genetically engineered mosquitoes in the United States for the first time. We will share information on the challenges this project faced and the future of genetically modifying mosquitos for disease prevention.
