Were you paying attention to the weather today? If you missed it, I am so sorry for you! The good news, however, is that there will be many more days like today in our very near future. I have to say that the weather today was, freaking glorious! Doesn’t it just bring a smile to your face when you can shed a layer (or two or three) of clothing and look up at the sun and feel the heat upon your face?
So, the thing is this, we wait for the warm and sunny weather, and we know that it will come. We may have to wait a bit longer on occasion, but we know, in fact we have no doubt, that come every (approximately) March 20th, better weather is just around the corner.
Just so you know, I am writing this Monday night and the weather that I am referring to was Monday’s weather. Your first opportunity to read this will be Tuesday, when the weather is supposed to be even better! So, if you happen to read this while it is nice and warm and sunny outside, do me a favor, please. Run outside, look up at the sun, feel the warmth upon your face while you close your eyes, and then imagine that when the sun goes down tonight that there is no guarantee of ever having such a gorgeous day again.
This horrible analogy is my way of getting you to think about the unknowns that so many millions of people live with every day. Where will my/our next meal come from? Will there be water to drink tomorrow? How will I support my family or protect them from the natural (and seemingly so mundane to most of us) dangers of this environment? The list goes on and on and on, from the lips and minds of every walk of human from every corner (yes, even ours) of the world.
You may never know such unknowns and in fact I wish that nobody had to, ever! You may never even think about the hardships which I have described in this short narrative but, yet you want to do something about this situation. You are a Rotarian because you want to make a difference in the life of another. A difference of betterment, a difference which reduces some of those unknowns. Thank you for that!

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia.
“I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...
Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...
