I’ve been having a lot of internal questioning lately, about why I do the things I do, like write books for kids or serve in Rotary, and luckily a couple of weeks ago, I got to talk to the Ellsworth club and was able to hone in on why I’m a writer and a Rotarian.
For me, it’s about building connections between people through stories or service. That’s not the motivation for some people, but in order to be happy, I have to believe that this world is capable of being a better place, that our community is capable of that, and that we as individuals are also capable of that – of being ‘better.’
A recent study showed that one of the major factors of living a long life wasn’t about physical health, but it was about connections, about talking to people on the street, and having friends in your life.
Rotary can do that for people. It provides connections and friendships while we work together to do good.
This week is another service from the chair experiment during the meeting, and this time, we need to bring scissors. If you’re planning to be at the Wednesday meeting, bring some scissors with you. Birch Bay doesn’t have a TSA check-point, so you should be okay to get in. And the service we’ll be doing is for animals. Because they give us connections, too.
