Christmas

Tis the season! The season for so many wonderful and happy things is upon us. It is currently spitting snow outside of my window and there is a slight, very slight, accumulation on the deck. To me, this is not one of the wonderful things of this season, but I do know that many of you love it, so, for you folks, falling snow would be one thing to rejoice in. Thanksgiving, the leader of the parade, has passed us by and we can see Christmas coming down the block, followed closely by Hanukkah and the New Year.

Of these things, Christmas would be my favorite. While I do greatly enjoying overindulging in the gastronomical department on Thanksgiving, I get much more joy out of the “gift” of Christmas. For me, as for many of you, the joys of Christmas are varied. I love giving gifts and seeing the happiness and delight on the face of the receiver (unless I made a very poor choice and the receiver cannot even feign enthusiasm) and I love the overall theme of Christmas to include Santa Claus. While most of us no longer believe in jolly Saint Nick, having a young child helps to reignite that belief and extend our ability to suspend disbelief, at least for me.

So, if you missed both of your opportunities to see, or even chat with, Santa Claus here in Bar Harbor last Friday night, you are lucky enough to get another chance. That’s right, another chance to sit on Santa’s lap (feel free to jump up and down while you are perched!) and tell him what you want for Christmas. Where can you experience this extraordinary adventure? Well, at Pat’s Pizza on Pleasant St. on December 7th at 5 p.m. is the answer! In addition to seeing Santa, you will get to socialize with magnificent Rotarians, and non-Rotarians, eat some delicious food and participate in the silent and live auctions. I won’t bore you with how your purchasing of the auction items will actually be you giving to others (and probably bringing extreme amounts of joy with your monetary contributions), but I will say that it will be an amazingly good time and I hope, dare I say that I expect, to see you all there!

Lastly, I wish to give a hearty and heartfelt thank you and expression of extreme appreciation to all of you who helped bring this night together and make it possible for us all to enjoy!

From Rotary International
Though Atlanta has seen its share of violence and inequity over time, today it brims with reminders that there is another way. Get inspired while you’re visiting for the 2017 Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. Take a short walk from the convention center to the Center for Civil and Human Rights. There, you can see the handwritten notes, speeches, and sermons of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., experience an interactive 1960s-era lunch counter “sit-in,” and learn more about persecuted groups all over the world. A streetcar will take you to the Martin Luther King Jr...

CNBC has ranked The Rotary Foundation No. 3 in its annual list of Top 10 Charities Changing the World in 2016. The Foundation was noted for connecting 1.2 million members from more than 200 geographic areas to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges, including projects that focus on disease prevention,...
