This Wednesday, Oct 2nd, the evening meeting will be held at the Bluenose Inn. I hope to see you there, and as we haven’t been there for a while, I am excited to go back and enjoy the classy atmosphere and beautiful views of Frenchman Bay.
Every year on Polio World Day, our club has held activities within the community, and we will continue that trend this year. This year, our club has teamed up with Sherman's and Spruce and Gussy in Bar Harbor. They have agreed to be our official partners in raising Polio awareness and money. On October 24th, we will have Purple Pinkie and Polio information stations in both locations. Anyone who makes a donation and shows their purple pinkie will receive 10% off their purchases that day. These are prime locations, and we hope that both tourists and residents alike will participate. We need volunteers for that day in both locations. Foundation Chair, Stefanie Joy Muscat, has drafted a press release that will go to the Islander next week. Stefanie and I will volunteer, and we hope more Rotarians can donate a bit of their time to help raise Polio awareness in the community. Chris Popper at WDEA will provide some promotion as well. He will interview Stefanie about this event and provide a video shortly thereafter to post. We’d also like to continue our partnership with Pat’s Pizza. I will talk with them this week and hopefully get them on board as well.
Speaking of more volunteer opportunities, the 2019 Downeast Living with Cancer Conference will be held at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and Event Center on Thursday, November 7th. The Club has donated $750.00 to this cause and will have a table there where we can showcase what we do as a club with signs and brochures as well as showcasing international projects and Polio day awareness events. We need one, and preferably two, people to manage the table from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you are interested, please contact me.
Rotarian Scott Hammond has sent an email to the club inviting us to the third annual philosophy lecture in memory of his son Paul. The lecture will be held next Friday evening, October 4th, at the Jesup Library. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. and will be presented by Dr. Joshua Schwartz, who also graduated from MDI High School and is the son of Barry and Susan Schwartz, and the nephew of Jeff Miller. I hope some of us are able to attend and support the Hammonds and the Jesup in memory of Paul.
The Rotary Leadership Institute will be on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Lewiston – Auburn College. If you are planning to attend this year, be sure to register as soon as possible. To register, go to the
RLI Northeast home page. The day will start with registration at 7:30 a.m., with classes from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The fee is $90.00 (the club pays that fee) and includes breakfast, lunch and coffee break. As I said before, the RLI provides an educational opportunity for Rotarians identified as potential leaders by their club presidents. Each club president is asked annually to nominate club members as potential club leaders (not necessarily future presidents) in the years ahead. It is hoped that these courses will also motivate the participants to be enthusiastic, creative and dedicated Rotarians.
