If you didn’t attend the meeting last Wednesday night at the very lovely home of Jim Mroch and his wife Mary Ratner, you missed a wonderful opportunity for some relaxing fellowship. I want to thank Jim and Mary for opening their home to us and for being such gracious hosts. They did an outstanding job and set the bar high for future evening fellowship meetings!
Pete Carroll held a Park Street Playground meeting prior to the start of Wednesday night’s fellowship and I am excited about the future of this Bar Harbor (MDI) Rotary Club endeavor. For those of you who don’t want to be a part of the earlier stages of this project but would like to lend a hand in some other fashion, I am certain that you will have a chance to get your hands dirty, literally, in the near future.
Similarly, we are gearing up for October’s Bar Harbor Kids Book Festival, our two-day festival that brings authors to schools on Friday and then is open and free to the public at Bar Harbor locations on Saturday. We’re going to need a lot of help for this, so please get your service persona ready.
This week’s speaker will be Cornell Knight, Bar Harbor’s town manager. He will be speaking on a number of ongoing projects, such as, the Route 3 project, the Ferry Terminal, cruise ships, parking etc. I am sure it will be an interesting talk with the opportunity to have some of your most pressing questions answered. I hope to see you all there!

Fill a Boat on September 18th
I began this event in September of 2013. My inspiration was my daughter in law, Trish Corliss, who was diagnosed with a rare type of Ovarian cancer at the age of 34 around three weeks after her first child, Gracie was born in February of 2012. She spent the first year of Gracie’s life having an ovary removed and all the terrible treatments to help her survive cancer, something a young new mother should not have to endure.
After that Trish started trying to Pay it Forward by establishing Team Joyful Hope for Stand up to Cancer. I desperately was trying to help from afar (they live in Indiana). I was talking to my customer, Gary Fagan, who owns Acadia Nature Cruises, and we shared stories of dealing with cancer. He then looked at me, and said directly, “Fill a Boat!” I did not know what he meant, so he said it again, but this time it was “Fill My Boat.” He offered his boat for free, which holds a hundred or so people for a two hour cruise, and all the money people paid went to Team Joyful Hope and Stand up to Cancer. Over the last three years we have been able to raise over $10,000.
Trish is now cancer free, and with the help of one healthy ovary gave birth to my 4th and youngest granddaughter, Ellie in November. They all are coming to Maine in September to cruise Frenchman Bay on September 18th for the 4th annual Fill A Boat. I could use help; from Rotarians mostly by attending and/or helping prepare small platters of finger foods. The time is 4-8 on a Sunday afternoon, and there is a requested donation of $25.
This may be my last year of doing this, but it has been hugely fun and well supported. I am deeply grateful to everyone who can or has helped. The attached picture shows some of our Rotary members and the families…Martha Abbot, the Wrobel family, Scott and Debbie Hammond, and I believe Dean and Penny Read. The four offices that I am affiliated with all pay for their employees and spouses, which amounts to around 30+people. As I said the boat holds 100, and it does not seem fair to Acadia Nature Cruises if I don’t get the boat filled!
This year the cruise has even more meaning to me as I lost my younger to a very fast moving aggressive cancer in June.
The Rotary Foundation has received the highest possible score from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
In the most recent ratings, released on 1 September, The Rotary Foundation earned the maximum 100 points for both financial health and accountability and transparency.
The ratings reflect how efficiently Charity Navigator believes the Foundation will use donations, how well it has sustained programs and services, and its level of commitment to good governance and openness.
In the previous rating, the Foundation had received 97 points.

Rotary clubs of District 6200 are collecting relief funds to help thousands of victims after record flooding devastated communities in southern Louisiana, USA, earlier this month. Torrential rains caused rivers, streams, and bayous to swell, damaging or destroying more than 60,000 homes and killing at least 13 people.
The U.S. Coast Guard and emergency responders helped rescue more than 30,000 residents from the rising flood waters. As of 25 August, more than 3,000 residents were still in emergency shelters even after the water receded.
