Last Saturday, members of the community, including some rotarians, participated in the Town Hill Playground clean up day, a service community project organized by Joy O’Shaughanessy. It was a fun time, and a lot was accomplished. I got there, rake in hand, and did my part as well. The gathering of all these people makes me realize the importance to belonging to a community that cares for each other the way ours does. Together we made the Town Hill Playground not only look fabulous, but safer and cleaner for the children as well. A special thanks to Elise Bell Frank and her family and the numero uno Dick Fox for showing up and giving their time to help with this project. Also, thank you to all Rotarians who reached out to me and wanted to participate, but for personal reasons or previous commitments couldn’t make it. Service is our primary goal in Rotary. The Town Hill Playground clean up day was an unplanned community service opportunity, and we chipped in nonetheless. This year, we are planning to participate in a few more projects, and I hope you will have the opportunity to assist and help. Stay tuned.

Value of Rotary Volunteering
Did you know that the special report prepared for Rotary International by the John Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies found that Rotary members had volunteered a total of 5.8 million hours within a four-week survey period? The report gave a conservative estimate of nearly 47 million hours of volunteer effort generated by Rotary members in a typical year. This is remarkable.
Volunteering is rich and diverse. It is not just about organizing hundreds of volunteers for large events. It is also a spontaneous act of kindness, such as helping neighbors, shoveling their walkways, helping an elderly person reach that upper shelf in the supermarket; even helping clean the Town Hill Playground. I am sure you all have or will have done a random act of kindness toward someone else in your lifetime. Volunteering is helping, not hiring; giving, not taking; contributing, not counting.
