I look forward to seeing you and other BH/MDI Rotary members at our evening meeting this week on Wednesday, August 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Penny and Dean Read’s house at 3 Garden Way in Bar Harbor (the first house on the left as you head down the Schooner Head Road, on the corner of the SHR and Garden Way, just after the Compass Harbor Condos). Penny will be preparing some delicious appetizers, I will have a few pizzas; please bring a dish to share if you are inclined to do so. I’ll have iced tea and lemonade, but BYOB if you want something more robust. Parking is limited so plan to carpool with a buddy if you can. And finally, please RSVP if you plan to attend. It will help with planning food. I look forward to a great evening of fellowship and fun.
Also this week, we have our 2nd Rotary Roadside Cleanup on Saturday, August 7 at 8:30 a.m. Please meet us at the Seal Cove Shops in Southwest Harbor (near the Liquor Locker). I’ll bring supplies.

All,
We need your help! This year, the Acadia National Park Social Science Team is reviving the Carriage Road Census counts that began in 2001 and continued to 2015. These important counts give us valuable data related to the use of our incredible carriage road resources. Continuing the census counts will allow us to better look at long-term use trends of the carriage road system. Unfortunately, we need a lot of help to make this happen, and that’s where you come in.
Who can help? You and anyone else you think might be interested and available.
What will you do? Sign up online (details below) to be stationed at a carriage road entrance. At your assigned site you count all entries for the period you’re there. Each session is 4.5 hours, and counts will be summed hourly (there are more details in the attached report).
Where will you do it? We will be monitoring 10 different carriage road entrances (the Visitor Center, Duck Brook Bridge, Eagle Lake, Eagle Lake boat launch, Bubble Pond, Jordan Pond east, Jordan Pond west, Brown Mountain, Parkman Mountain, and Wildwood Stables). After you sign up to volunteer, we will follow up with you about a census location.
When will you do it? There are two time slots available for each site on Tuesday, August 10 (9:00am – 1:30pm and 1:30pm – 6:00pm). We also have a rain date for Wednesday, August 11, if the weather looks bad.
Why do it? Because you love the carriage roads and want to help!
How do you sign up? Follow this link (https://www.trackitforward.com/site/583625/event/595944) to create an account and sign up using the Friends of Acadia volunteer management software.
Will there be other opportunities? Yes! In addition to August 10, we would like to repeat this process once a month on September 4, and October 9. So, there will be other opportunities if you can’t make it this time.
