Some facts:
It costs less than $1.00 US to vaccinate a child against polio.
Rotary clubs took on a project of raising funds to help pay for polio vaccines in 1979.
Since 1985, with the launch of the flagship PolioPlus program, Rotarians have raised over $1.4 billion to immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries and volunteered countless hours to help with the eradication of the disease.
In 1985, polio crippled more than 350,000 children per year in 125 countries.
In 1988, Rotarians raised $247 million for PolioPlus and the World Health Assembly passed a resolution to eradicate polio, setting up the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
The last case of wild polio in the US was reported in 1991.
UNICEF, the World Health Organization, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and governments around the world have all joined Rotary International in the fight to end polio .
From 2013 to 2018, every US Dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will become three dollars thanks to the 2-to-1 match from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Recently, Nigeria was officially declared polio free, with the last reported case on July 24, 2014.
Currently, only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan are polio endemic.
Fewer than 360 cases were reported in the world in 2014.
Smallpox is the only other disease that has been eradicated.

I would like to invite you to attend the first International Committee meeting regarding our next Wheelchair Project in the country of Belize. If you have an interest of being part of this committee, either helping, serving or traveling, please join us on Wednesday August 19th at 5:30 pm at Pat's Pizza in Bar Harbor. In this meeting I will update everyone in where we are at this point with the BWP's project and discuss some ideas for fundraiser. A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since our earliest days. The first design was made by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show dust and motion. The wheel was said to illustrate "Civilization and Movement." Most of the early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publications and letterheads. Finally, in 1922, it was decided that all Rotary clubs should adopt a single design as the exclusive emblem of Rotarians. Thus, in 1923, the present gear wheel with 24 cogs and six spokes was adopted by the "Rotary International Association." A group of engineers advised that the gear wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a "keyway" in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. So, in 1923 the keyway was added and the design which we now know was formally adopted as the official Rotary International emblem.
Rotary President K.R. Ravindran has named six Rotary Global Women of Action for 2015. The honorees were chosen for their dedication and service, which has improved the lives of thousands around the world.
“Every day at Rotary I see firsthand how our members work to change lives and make a significant impact,” said Ravindran. “Rotary’s Global Women of Action embody Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.”
The women will be honored at Rotary Day at the United Nations in New York City on 7 November. They will address attendees and lead discussions on various topics related to their work.

This is an opportunity to showcase your club or district project, recruit members for your Rotary Fellowship, share information about your Rotarian Action Group, or market Rotary merchandise if you are a licensed RI vendor.
The application deadline is 30 September. Booth allocations will be awarded by 1 November.

When Mariana Day moved in 1989 to the small beach town of Chacala, in Nayarit, Mexico, she noticed that the surrounding rural areas struggled to maintain schools. And most children weren’t able to go beyond an eighth-grade education. Day, who is a member of the Rotary Club of Bahía de Jaltemba-La Peñita, in Nayarit, had started a local scholarship program before she joined Rotary. Called Changing Lives, the program provided students with high school tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and transportation.
