What Is Rotary; It’s Your Story to Tell
When people come up to you and ask what is Rotary, how do you answer? For a lot of Rotarians, the answer isn’t simple and it isn’t easy, but as Carrie constantly tells me, “Rotary is a network of 1.2 million professionals who come together to solve problems and make their communities and the global community better.” Back in 2011, Rotary began an initiative to strengthen its image as well as to motivate, engage and inspire its members (both current and prospective members). Since this initiative started, Rotary’s awareness levels globally have grown from 60 % to 75% among Rotarians and prospective members. That’s pretty impressive, but what about here, in our community? Our friends and possible future Rotarians can’t know about the good work we do unless you spread the word, like and share a social media post, tell them about the club’s service projects, our amazing Interact club, the good we do. Even though our global awareness has increased, the general public is still at a loss about what Rotary is, which leads me to the question:
What does Rotary mean to you?
How is Rotary different than other clubs you belong to?
About 35 % of the general public don’t know about Rotary and the good we do. That needs to change.
What are Rotarians? We are people of action who want to improve their community and the world. One of the Public Image staff at Rotary International says it best, “Where others see challenges, Rotarians see opportunity and hope. Where others see problems, we see solutions. And when Rotarians see what’s possible in their local communities, they mobilize their fellow club members and other community leaders and committed professional experts. They share their vision and exchange ideas about potential, lasting solutions. And they take action to bring those ideas to life.”
Let’s all work to be that kind of Rotarian and to share our message with our community.
See you Wednesday,
Shaun
