James Collier gave a sad dollar for the devastation that the earthquake has caused in Haiti. Please read the message I posted from our District Governor on how to help with rescue and relief efforts through Rotary, posted separately.
We had another good turnout this week (28 members) but missed our minimum of 35. Consider bringing a guest to a Rotary. It will boost our numbers and be a treat for them. Chris Pasha's cooking and the view from Birch Bay Village's dining room continue to be a draw, even in January. Remember that we are now selling To Go Boxes of leftovers for $6 to help meet our minimum and not waste food. Announcements: • New Rotary Tee Shirts are in!! If you ordered one, and haven't picked it up, bring $15 to next week's meeting. Thanks! • President Elect James Collier will be attending PETS in St. Georges, P.Q. March 20-21 • District Governor nomination forms are out. If you know of a past president who you think would make a good District Governor, please let me know so we can submit a nomination. • We received a thank you note from Swans Island Librarian Candi Joyce thanking our club volunteers for their "astounding help" sorting and culling through library book donations. • The Bangor Rotary Club is sponsoring a Pond Hockey tournament Jan. 30-31. I have the details. • The YWCA and the American Heart Association are co-sponsoring a Red Dress Fashion Show on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1:30 at the YW. Benni asked female members of the club who own red dresses (or any red outfit) to volunteer to be models. Contact Benni for details. • Becky invited club members to come to the opening of the Great Cranberry Island Portrait Project exhibit at College of the Atlantic's Blum Gallery on Monday, Jan. 18 from 4-6. The multi-media exhibit includes profiles of longtime islanders which she wrote. • Mike Bonsey thanked the club for helping to pay for him and his daughter to travel to Ecuador with the district governor in March to visit the district project and do volunteer work there. Birthdays and Anniversaries Pat Curtis has a birthday Jan. 19 and we recognized Peter Blauth's second anniversary as a member of our club!
Ticket Drawings James Collier had the winning $10 ticket. The Queen of Hearts eluded us for one more week. Program: Kathie Norwood, Director of Downest Health Services and President of the Ellsworth Noontime Club received a $1,000 check from our club for the District Simplified Grant that supports a portable dental project in Hancock and Washington Counties. Kathie spoke about the benefits of the program, showed us pictures of kids getting checkups and the collapsible dentist chair the grant purchased. Next week: Our beloved Sergeant at Arms John Willett will give his classification speech.
