It was an intimate meeting at the Hotel with no guests.  Thanks to Neil Baldwin for his talk on the District Expo last month.  The Expo saw an excellent number of Broadbeach Rotarians and partners attend and enjoy the speakers, meals and fellowship.
The Expo featured some very good speakers including Bernie Shakeshaft who is running a program in Armidale NSW for young people who need a hand up.  At BackTrack he welcomes teenagers falling into a life of petty crime and since it began in 2006 BackTrack has helped more than 1,000 teenagers.
Other speakers included Kevin Butler who runs BlazeAid, Dr John Parker who works with Red Cross and MSF and Alexander Rubin who the Australian Military contingent commander and lead planner to rescue the Thai soccer boys from the cave.
The locals in Tenterfield were very friendly and welcoming.
We still need one person to work on the Sausage sizzle (morning shift) on 22 April. Please register on the website.

For information of members I have included, the following, which is an extract from our Constitution regarding attendance.
 
However, please note that, the following does not apply if a member is entitled to the “85 Year rule”
The 85-year rule basically is – if a members age, plus their years in Rotary are equal to or greater than 85, they are entitled to the 85-year rule which exempts them from attendance requirements
Note if entitled to the 85 year rule, application must be made to the Board for approval and recorded in the minutes
 
“Every member must attend regular Club meetings and must attend or make up at least 50% of regular club meetings in each half of the Rotary year.  Half of the Rotary year is defined as January through June and July through December. 
There are some exemptions to this which include:
  • Attends at least 50% of the time devoted for the regular meeting of another club.
  • Attends a district or club sponsored activity such as those listed in this manual under Make-Ups.
  • Attends a regular meeting of a Rotaract or Interact Club.
  • Attends a convention of Rotary International, a RI committee meeting, a RI District conference, a RI District assembly, any district meeting, or any district committee meeting.”

As reported elsewhere in this Bulletin the District Expo was held at Tenterfield over the weekend 25 to 27 March.
Broadbeach had ten representatives attend and seen below at the Saturday night dinner in the Showgrounds Pavillion.

World Immunization Week 2022
 
Join with Rotary to promote the power of vaccines to protect children and save lives
During World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, let’s advocate for polio eradication and the importance of vaccines to the health and well-being of our communities.

Vaccines are one of the greatest advances of modern medicine. They’re safe, effective, and save millions of lives each year. Our progress in the fight to end polio is proof that vaccines work.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative estimates that the polio vaccine has saved more than 20 million children around the world from paralysis. We need to continue vaccinating children against polio, because as long as the poliovirus circulates anywhere, it is a threat everywhere.

Here’s how you can support Rotary’s efforts during World Immunization Week:
  • Donate to PolioPlus to help Rotary and our partners deliver polio vaccines to vulnerable children. Or start an online fundraiser using Raise for Rotary and share it with your friends, colleagues, and family members. All contributions will be matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
 
 
 
FROM OUR MEETING 12 APRIL 2022

Thirteen members attended the meeting which is a very disappointing turnout of the 34 members of the Club
Sergeant Andrew introduced President Peter who opened the meeting
Chair of the scooter committee Harold Busch informed the meeting that the target of having a fleet of 50 scooters has been reached. This has been enabled as several scooters have been returned by recipients, some through illness and others who have made other arrangements. President Peter suggested we sell off some of the surplus scooters
Moved Pauline Armstrong, seconded Neil Baldwin that the Club vote for Scott Champion for the position of “Queensland Club Representative to the Board of Rotary International District 9640 Ltd” Carried
Youth Director Noel Hodges advised that the application from Josie Hamilton sponsored by the Club for a place at RYPEN has been approved
Sergeant Andrew conducted an amusing sergeants session – even with such limited numbers.
Andrew won the raffle and Neil Baldwin won heads and tails
Neil Baldwin gave an overview of the District Expo held at Tenterfield
Unfortunately, it was a very wet occasion that spoilt some events but not the spirit and enthusiasm from the 366 who attended
Events included a BBQ at the Railway Museum, District Governors golf challenge, Saturday night dinner dance
Guest speakers included:
  • Kevin Butler – Blaze Aid, helping people affected by Floods, Bush fires, Drought
  • Speaker from Backtrack – helping non-performing children
  • Dr John Parker – working in 3rd world countries especially refugee camps
  • Alexander Ruben a Major in the Australian Army – Thailand cave rescue, who gave some amazing statistics
The 2023 District Expo will be held at Yamba
In conclusion there was some lively discussion in regard to the attendance, or more specifically, non-attendance of the membership
President Peter closed the meeting and thanked the 13 members for attending
