Fellow Rotarians and Friends

We are fast approaching the end of the first quarter of the 20-21 Rotary Year.  Thank you to all members, partners and friends who, despite the uncertainty of COVID 19, have helped to make the Rotary Club of Broadbeach the great organisation it is.  On October 11, we have our second Bunnings Sizzle.  Hopefully as restrictions ease our Friday opportunities may once again open up in 2021, but at this stage its not on the horizon for this year.  Ray will be seeking volunteers for the 11th, we require two shifts of five to comply with Bunnings requirements.

The fundraising will allow us to continue our support of the STEM Robotics at Merrimac High School and other club commitments.  As I said on Tuesday, with the wise wizardry stewardship of Treasurer Noel, our financial position is quite strong moving forward.  Depending on how restrictions ease within the community and funding opportunities, we may even be able to take on an additional project that wasn’t possible when we were locked down, something to be considered as things open up.

Thanks to PP Dr Graham, Kevin and Uwe for the work on the Pentecost project working bees at Surfers Sunrise shed.  The event Surfers Sunrise are holding on the 14th of November, marking their 10000th wheelchair, will allow all to see the Pentecost building erected on site (before being flat packed for shipping).  A great opportunity to see the fruits of the clubs labour coming to fruition.

A great roll up last Tuesday for the Crime Stoppers presentation.  We’ll get Keith back along, as time beat us between him and Sergeant Tracey Clouston.   A lot of people think Crime Stoppers and the Police are one and the same.  That’s not the case.  Crime Stoppers are a charity set up to take anonymous information that may help solve crime.  Crime Stoppers first began in Albuquerque, New Mexico in July 1976.  It has since morphed globally into a community program that allows people to provide anonymous information about criminal activity. Often managed by non-profit groups or the police, it operates separately from the emergency telephone number system or other standard methods of contacting police.

Tracey gave a great presentation on home security tips, reiterating what I’ve always suspected.  The average crook is not all that smart and sophisticated, rather opportunistic, using unlocked doors, open garages and the habits of most people leaving valuables in sight or usual storage places to commit their crimes.

Tracey has passed on the below links for the Coppas on the Couch Road Safety messages. I urge you to watch and share the YouTube links below of powerful road safety messages.

SOME FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2019-20

The 2019-20 year had no shortage of challenges! However, there were some great highlights for the Foundation that we can all celebrate. Here are just a few:
 more than US$20 million was granted to help communities respond to COVID-19
 for the first time ever, the Foundation awarded more than US$300 million in grants ($307.1 million)
 we surpassed our comprehensive fundraising goal of $400 million by raising US$408.6 million in new gifts and commitments
 there was a 32% increase in contributions received online and the number of new online donors doubled
 in many, many ways — such as virtual events, telethons and expanded use of social media — Rotarians and staff adapted to the new reality of COVID and undertook Foundation activities in brand new ways.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 22ND SEP 2020

Scribe: Harold Busch

**Acting sergeant Uwe opened the meeting at 6.30pm with 29 members/guests in attendance. Members and guests were informally welcomed by President Les.
**Nasser proposed a toast to front line workers in the Covid19 crisis.
**Bill won the raffle and heads and tails was won by Tracey Clouston. Andrew introduced the Silver Circle and from the draw was the initial winner of $50.00.
**Harold gave an update on the status of the STEM ROBOTICS project.
GUEST SPEAKERS………..Keith Knight and Tracey Clouston were introduced by David O’Dwyer.  Both speakers have been involved with Crime Stoppers for a number of years.
History/Bckground………Crime stoppers is a world wide organisation that commenced in Mexico in 1987 where a murder case was difficult to solve and the police sought information from the public. That information was provided piece by piece hence the use of the jigsaw puzzle piece on Crime stoppers material.
The organisation is manned by volunteers and is unfunded. Income is through fund raising EG Bunnings sizzles…Bake Day at Bunnings…Local Grants…….Sale of ant theft prevention wallets. There are 53 Crime stopper chapters in Queensland.
Measuring effect of Crime stoppers is difficult as many reportings do not lead directly with an arrest………Should an arrest we made following a reporting and a guilty verdict is found through the courts a reward of $500 or $1000 is given
Like all volunteer organisations Crime Stoppers are always on the lookout for new members.
Crime Prevention………Tracey gave an insight to the status of criminal activity on the Gold Coast. With the number of unemployed through covid19 there could be expected and increase in petty stealing from homes and cars. The majority of break and enter are optimistic through the lack of security.
Always lock the front of your home……Keep your car locked.
Keep garage doors closed and locked. Especially when working in the backyard.
Report any suspicious activity to crime stoppers……Share information with the police.
Best Precaution……….Crime Stoppers are available to carryout a Home Security Audit. Highly recommended.
Current Crime Stoppers major projects……….Coppers on the Couch..This project takes Crime Stoppers to a number of locations to provide community awareness of the organisation. Many and various topics are covered and it is designed to present the police in a positive light……..
Save….is a project directed to school students and involves participation with all emergency services.Road safety lectures are included along with a graphic utube on road safety featuring the mother of a young man involved in the death of a friend.
Following the meeting Rotarians were generous with donations and the purchase of Crime Stoppers  fund raising items.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Harold stood up. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Harold?' 'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!'

The math teacher saw that Harold wasn't paying attention in class. She called on him and said, 'Harold! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?' Harold quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!'

Harold's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him. Harold asked, “Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture ? "

A bloke was on the town and went to go into a nightclub.
The Bouncer told him he didn't have  a tie so he couldn't go in.
The bloke went back to the boot of his car and go out a set of jumper leads.
He put them around his neck and full of confidence walked back up to the bouncer.
The Bouncer said  " " O.K. I'll pay that one, you can go in but don't start anything."

Paddy and Seamus two brothers were sat together at the airport going to Greece for a holiday.
Paddy says "I wish I'd brought the television set."
Seamus replies "Why, are you bored then ?"
Paddy says "No, the passports are on top of it."
