ACTING PRESIDENTS REPORT

Another fun night was had at this week’s meeting
It was great to be able to join together in celebrating Frank Adorjan’s 80th Birthday. Quite a milestone. Congratulations from all of us Frank.

Good to see Pauline Bill and Alain back safe and sound from Japan. We look forward to a full report on the trip on President Bruce’s return this week.

Well done to Malcolm and his sausage sizzle team assisting Bunnings at short notice and raising around $1,600.00 in the process. A great effort.

Thanks to Kevin O’Brien for filling in as Sargent at short notice

Bob Jordan has done a great job with the new glasses we give to our guest speakers. Have a look at them when you get the chance. Thanks Bob.

Our guest speaker Bern Lawson’s message to us was a very important one I feel in encouraging us to write our individual life story. It is going to be very important to our family members for future generations. LETS DO IT!!  As Bern indicated she is willing to assist anyone who wishes to get started.

Next week we hear from Erica Morgante on the subject of Home Instead – Senior Care. It will be most informative.
Also next week we welcome back President Bruce who will be full of great ideas and enthusiasm following his trip to Japan and meeting with our sister clubs.

I wish you and yours a very happy and safe Easter break. See you next week.

Ray

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE

An interesting Rotary program of fellowship is the Rotary Friendship Exchange. This activity, originally recommended by the New Horizons Committee in 1981, is intended to encourage Rotarians and spouses to visit with Rotarian families in other parts of the world. It may be conducted on a club-to-club or district-to-district basis. The idea is for several Rotarian couples to travel to another country on the Rotary Friendship Exchange. Later the hospitality is reversed when the visit is exchanged. After a successful pilot experiment, the Rotary Friendship Exchange has become a permanent program of Rotary. The Rotary Friendship Exchange is frequently compared to the Group Study Exchange program of The Rotary Foundation, except that it involves Rotarian couples who personally pay for all expenses of their intercountry experience. Doors of friendship are opened in a way, which could not be duplicated except in Rotary. Rotarians seeking an unusual vacation and fellowship experience should learn more about the Rotary Fellowship Exchange. Some unusual Rotary adventures are awaiting you!
Our own Neil Baldwin is the current District 9640 Chair of Rotary Friendship Exchange so have a chat to him to find out more.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

This year we are celebrating 100 years of our Rotary Foundation doing good in the world.

Contributing to The Rotary Foundation
As we move rapidly into the last Quarter of the 2016/2017 Rotary year it is timely to remind members that time is running out to make your personal contribution to "Our Charity" The Rotary Foundation.
In addition to the Club contributing US$100 per member to the Annual Fund and US$1,500 to PolioPlus, President Bruce has a goal for all members to make a personal contribution of at least US$26,50 to the Annual Fund.
Why US$26.50?  That is the amount of the initial donation made 100 years ago this June and the International Challenge is for 100% of Rotarians to make a personal contribution to the foundation in the 100th year.

The majority of Club Members have already made a personal contribution, the total of which is now well over $3,000 - thank you to all for helping The Rotary Foundation to continue to "Do Good in the World".
For those yet to contribute there are a number of options but we suggest simply meeting the challenge of contributing US$26.50 (A$36) is not a big ask but you may also prefer to join our ever growing group of Centurions who have contributed A$100.  Don't forget that all individual contributions are tax deductible.

To contribute please talk to Club TRF Director Neil Jones.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 11 APRIL 2017
(Scribe Neil Jones)

Sergeant Kevin O'Brien opened the meeting welcoming all in attendance and invited Tony Lewis to propose the toast.
In proposing his toast to the Emergency Services and volunteers, Tony referred to the great work done during the recent flood emergency.

Kevin introduced Vice President Ray Milton who was again standing in for President Bruce who is yet to return from Japan.
Ray welcomed Pauline, Alain & Bill back from their visit to Kasaoka and mentioned how tough this club is in that Pauline and Alain were on door duty first night back.
Ray also welcomed Peter Dimond back from overseas, visiting Rotarian Adrian Crowe and guest speaker Bern Lawson.

Malcolm reported on the extra sausage sizzle organised at very late Friday evening for Saturday, thanking all who volunteered at short notice  Uwe, Neil B, Neil J,  Pat & John Curr and himself & Desley) and achieved the excellent result of $1,615.

Alain gave a brief overview of the visit to Kasaoka without revealing much except that they were all blown away by the hospitality extended to them. More next week when President Bruce will be present.

Birthday wishes were extended to Frank Adorjan on his eightieth birthday.  The chocolate cake was delicious.

Sergeant Kevin appointed bean counters, Neil & Peter as Bunyips & proceeded to work them overtime.

John Monks won the raffle (two weeks in succession) and Alex Jorden won Heads & Tails.

Pauline introduced guest speaker Bern Lawson.
Mother of two, wife to one, sibling to ten, daughter to her mother, auntie to 27 nieces and nephews, dedicated to her community but defined by her need to "make a difference".
Award winning author Bernadette Lawson took to the pen after life changing events fortified her need to "make a difference" in her community and therefore beginning her career as a story teller.

Bern insists that we all have a story and encourages us all write our story. Today she encourages people from all walks of life to maintain and mentor the bridge between the generation gap ensuring the experience, knowledge and wisdom of yesteryears is never lost.  Story telling not only records our culture but preserves it for the future.

Her first book tells her Mother's story "Life's a bitch so build a bridge and get over it"  Her second book "The True Spirit of Cyclone Yasi" needs no amplification and records much of her own experience. The forward contains a quote by Bern "Man never made any material as resilient as the Human Spirit" which says it all.

Next came "The Life of Australian Horseman Geoff Toomby", and her latest publication is "With Love From Nan & Pop - Our Life Story" which provides a template for all of us write down a little of our personal history for our descendants.

Bern closed by again encouraging every one of us to tell our story before it is too late and is lost forever.

Pauline presented Bern with our club glass and members joined in thanking Bern by acclamation.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

Naval History tidbit...
The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men.
This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea.
She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers).
However, let it be noted that according to her ship's log,
"On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum."
Her mission:
"To destroy and harass English shipping."
Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.
Then she headed for the Azores, arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.
On 18 November, she set sail for England ... In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each.
By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland .
Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn.
Then she headed home.
The U. S. S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky, and
38,600 gallons of water.

'Well,' said the vet, 'let's have a look at him' So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, he says, 'I'm going to have to put him down.' 'What? Because he's cross-eyed?' 'No, because he's really heavy'.
