Dear members,
 
An enjoyable night on Tuesday night with plenty of fellowship.  The meal was easy, enjoyable and plenty of it and plenty of avid discussions concerning the bowling prowess of various members.  Some pretty impressive sportsplay on the rink too, on a cool and clear evening.  Action shots to come!
 
Our AAIC friends have moved on and we wish them well in their battle against the scourge of ice.  Where to from here for the Hub, suggestions please.  The new lease from the Council has been approved and Bob will extrapolate same next week.
 
Assistance is needed for the car boot sale and book shop over the next few weeks so please help.  A couple of hours here and there will see their continued success.  We are also conducting a review of where we are at with Scooters too, being the signature project of the Club, assistance in managing this is also required.
 
Opportunities abound to get involved.  See you Tuesday night to welcome back Manuela Whitford for an update on Friends with Dignity.

Back  after a  few  weeks  away seeing  our new  great  granddaughter in Canberra.
I am  pleased  to  advise  the  club  that City of Gold Coast has  agreed  to  renew  the  lease on  the  Hub  for  a  term of  15  years which  will  probably  see most of  us off. Thanks  to  John  Harding  for his  assistance with what turned out  to be  an  extended  exercise.  The  council  will  shortly  arrange  a  physical  inspection of  the premises  but  have  informed  me  that  as no  fresh  Survey  certificate  is  required,  a  renewal  fee of only $175 applies, so we are about $2500 better off than originally anticipated.

I spent my early years at Rockfields Deepwater, a property selected by my grandfather in 1877 -My mother died of cancer when I was four. At the age of sixty my father was Ieft with three children to raise aged two, four and seven. Dad's older sister, a widow of sixty five with no children of her own returned home to care for us, some task at that age. 

I had six years education at Deepwater Fublic school and then attended Scots College in Warwick until the end of 1957. After returning to Rockfields I entered a partnership with my brother Charles, growing vegetables and running a small piggery. ln 1959 we acquired woodlands, a property my grandfather's younger brother had settled in about 1874 which was 1' 1/2 miles east of Rockfields. Woodlands was in a run down state as it hadn't been occupied for about 11 years and leased out to various farmers.

With the help of one of Pat's relatives I built a small 2 bedroom home on Woodlands and married Pat on the 20th June 1964. We have 2 children, Mark born in 1967 and Cindy born in 1969. As
the family grew we kept enlarging the home and ended up with a large home and a 5 acre garden which was in The Australian Open Garden Scheme. We opened the garden for many charity fundraisers.

In 1966 I lost my father so my brother, sister and I inherited Rockfields. Charles and I bought Joy out. During 1972we decided we needed more land and after being losing bidders on one property and arranging finance for another, the vendor changed his mind. I was approached in the Deepwater Pub about leasing 2200 acres just north of Deepwater. The ink was hardly dry on a 5 year contract when our next door neighbor offered to sell us 1200 acres of mainly scrub country joining Rockfields, so we purchased a bulldozer and a large loan. The bank manager was aghast when we told him that we were going to stock both properties with " ground lice" as he referred to as sheep. lt was the best move we ever made.
When the 5 year lease on Kurrajong expired Charles and I dissolved partnership, Charles took Rockfields and all the country west of the railway line, l took Woodlands and east of the railway line.
 
After dissolving partnership with Charles, Pat and I formed the company Slegona pty Ltd. ln 1977 we purchased Strathdale another run down property to the east cjf Woodlands on the Deepwater river. The idea was to improve it and sell for capital gain but we became attached to it so returned to our hobby and started collecting and improving new land. ln 1980 same story, purchased Yugunda at Bald Nob, 1983 Mt clear and Richards Mountain at Glen Elgin, 1988 Culgoa adjoining Strathdate which we gave to Mark and in 1996 woodlands south, part of original woodlands sold in 1910 by Guy Curr.

In 1978 we started Jay-Vee Poll Shorthorn cattle stud, over the years we sold bulls and heifers to cattlemen in areas from Nth Queensland to Victoria, east coast N.S.W to west Lake Eyre in South Australia.

We started selling land in 2005 when we decided none of the family wanted to continue with it so then we started buying units in Broadbeach as that was where we intended to
move to as we had been coming to Broadbeach for 50 years and felt at home. We sold the last 2 properties on consecutive days in October 2011.

l joined the Dundee Bushfire Brigade in 1958 and by 1988 had land in 5 brigade areas so was on call quite often in the fire season, in all 53 years of service. I served on the Glen lnnes Show Committee for 10 years, the Deepwater Jockey Club Committee for 45 years, N.S.W Graziers' Association, which became N.5.W.Farmers, for over 50 years. l was an inaugural member of Deepwater Apex Club and served in all eight portfolios before being handed my walking stick in 1982. I joined Glen lnnes Rotary Club after we started to cut back working hours in 2006-2007.
 
We moved to Broadbeach permanently on the 23rd November 2011 and transferred to Broadbeach Rotary in January 2OL2. l was a volunteer for Sailability until 2016. Both Pat
and I are enjoying our transition to retirement as I am still managing our company and investments. When time permits we take off travelling. Maybe we will completely retire
when we get too old.

THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is required to provide the 25,600 club leaders with appropriate instruction for the tasks they will assume. The annual district assembly is the major leadership-training event in each of the 500 Rotary districts of the world. The district assembly offers motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club. Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects. The assembly gives all participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting. Usually eight to ten delegates from each club are invited to attend the training session. Another important feature of a district assembly is a review by the incoming district governor of the program theme and emphasis of the new R.l. president for the coming year. District goals and objects are also described and plans are developed for their implementation. The success of each Rotary club is frequently determined by the club's full representation and participation in the annual district assembly.
 
District 9640 Assembly will be held at Woodlawn (on the outskirts of Lismore) on Sunday 12 March. President Elect Alain and members of his 2017/2018 Board will be attending but the event is open to all Rotarians providing a good opportunity to learn more about Rotary and meet fellow Rotarians from around the District. Joint Meeting With Broadbeach Inner Wheel Club
 For our meeting on Tuesday 21 March we will be joining our partners and friends at Broadbeach Inner Wheel Club at the Chiangmai Thai Restaurant, 2779 Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach at our usual time of 6.00pm for 6.30pm. The restaurant is opposite Cascade Gardens and parking is available. BYO or drinks available from the bar.  Cost will be $35.00 per person payable in cash at the door.
This is an Inner Wheel Club fundraiser to support Destiny Rescue, an organisation rescuing children from child sexual exploitation and slavery. Please come along and help make this a great night while also helping a very worthwhile cause.  Register as normal or advise Noel Hodges direct.
 
 
On Sunday 26 March 2017, Gold Coast Rotary in partnership with Surfers Sunrise Rotary and Griffith University Satellite Rotary Club will stage the inaugural Gold Coast Ramble - a major community event.  This goes way beyond a Fun Run.  It is great fun, since you need observation skills, the ability to solve some trivia questions.  And last, but not least: you will help to support various very worthwhile local charities, including PCYC, the Salvos and Gold Coast Homeless Youth. 
 
Whilst it is the inaugural event for the Gold Coast, the concept has been well and truly proven successful by the Rotary organizers in Perth.    Registration can be for individuals or for teams between 4 and 6 people.  Organize a team! Register! Let's see how many teams we can come up with and see who comes up as Broadbeach number one on the day!!!
 
                                                                                                                                         
 
VISIT TO SISTER CLUB KASAOKA JAPAN 1/2 APRIL 2017
Travel plans are well advanced for our Japan tour (30 March to 11 April) to incorporate a visit to Kasaoka to join our Sister Club's 75th anniversary celebrations.
The travel group of twelve are currently making flight bookings to and from Japan but it is not too late to join the group. Anyone interested should contact President Bruce as soon as possible.

BAREFOOT BOWLS NIGHT

 A wonderful evening of fun and fellowship was enjoyed at Broadbeach Bowls Club which has been completely refurbished in preparation for GC2018 when it will be the venue for the Commonwealth Games Bowls competition.
 
Thirty one members and guests enjoyed pre-dinner drinks, a very tasty BBQ meal  followed by a few ends of bowls. All participants had a lot of fun and many benefited by a little coaching from our own champion, Noel Hodges, but judging by the lack of tight heads and the widely scattered bowls, no potential champions were unveiled. The pictures tell the story.

WEEKLY LAUGHS 

I talked to a homeless man this morning and asked him how he ended up this way.
He said, "Up until last week, I still had it all. I had plenty to eat, my clothes were washed and pressed, I had a roof over my head, I had TV and Internet, and I went to the gym, the pool, and the library. I was working on my MBA on-line. I had no bills and no debt. I even had full medical coverage."
I felt sorry for him, so I asked, "What happened? Drugs? Alcohol? Divorce?"
"Oh no, nothing like that," he said. "I was paroled."

Recently a guy in Paris nearly got away with stealing several paintings from the Louvre.
However, after planning the crime, getting in and out passed security, he was captured only 2 blocks away when his van ran out of gas.
When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied: "I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh."

Some one liners to make you groan…
-Always keep several get well cards on the mantel. If unexpected guests arrive, they'll think you've been sick and unable to clean.
-Don't ever take a fence down until you know why it was put up.
-The only thing that wakes you up faster than coffee is spilled coffee.
-A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing and the lawn mower is broken.
-There are two types of roads in our country. One is under construction and the other is under repair.

When I was around 4 years old, I was biting my nails pretty badly and my mother showed me a picture of a child with a very swollen belly due to malnutrition. "That will happen to you if you keep biting your nails," she told me.
Later that week we were in the supermarket standing in line at the checkout counter behind a lady who was obviously 9 months pregnant. I pointed to her and, in a very loud voice, said, "We know what she has been doing don't we mommy?"
