President's Message

Dear members,

A fantastic meeting last week at Southport with a number of other Clubs also in attendance to hear Mark Peters, CEO of GoldOc, the Comm Games Organising Committee, provide a brief on the big machine of the Games which is coming to town.  In addition to that though, was the opportunity to share some love amongst the Clubs.  Marion Jones, Acting President of Southport, has paid particular compliment to Broadbeach Club by being so well represented and also for sharing ourselves around, so a great night for a number of reasons.
I was going to reciprocate the invite on the night for our guest speaker on Tuesday, however their meeting schedule is already planned.  I have shared the invite broadly so hopefully we will have a few extra's for our meeting with Assistant Commissioner Codd.  I will put money on it that there will not be a disappointed spectator on the night!  Please share the invite to partners and friends to come along.
This morning I delivered three of our six RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) nominee's to Camp Bornhoffen at Natural Bridge for their three days of leadership and 'enlightenment'.  The enthusiasm of the 16 volunteers was contagious!  I caught up with Stewart Hase (Next Gen Club / Iluka) who has managed the event for three years and will be moving on.  Although there are supposed to be four Rotarians attending, he could only find two, himself and Kath who is taking over.  With the vibe in the room, I was wishing I had put my hand up to help, Great opportunity for some or any of us to get involved in Rotary Leadership programs in the future....food for thought.
Rotary has so many great programs and opportunities!!
Look forward to talking more on Tuesday, please bring a partner or friend.

Bruce

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a weekend residential experience for youth aged 14-16 years designed to develop skills that will assist them in the transition to adulthood.  Participants are involved in a variety of workshops and activities, which provide an opportunity for them to personally develop, gain self confidence, communication skills, challenge themselves, build friendships, and develop life skills.
The program this year was conducted from 19 to 21 May with our Club sponsoring six attendees as mentioned in President Bruce's weekly message.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

This year we are celebrating 100 years of our Rotary Foundation doing good in the world.

An inspiring quote from Paul Harris
“I like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have just begun. What’s 40 years in the life of a great Movement? There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Rotary must simply continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress.”
Years later, Paul Harris’ words are just as meaningful. There are still so many new things to achieve and promises to keep.
Remember what Paul Harris said, we must all strive to be PIONEERS on the long road to PEACE.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 16 MAY 2017

Twenty nine Broadbeach members & guests together with Rotarians from Ashmore, Kirra Currumbin Tweed Heads, Robina and Surfers Paradise joined host Club Southport for that club's weekly meeting at Southport Golf Club.

District Governor Michael Irving chaired the meeting and opened proceedings with the Four Way Test and a toast to the Queen and people of Australia.

Assistant Governor Lea Rickwood proposed a toast to the Rotary Clubs of the Commonwealth - there are Rotary Clubs in all but 2 Commonwealth Countries.

Past President Marion Jones was acting  Southport President and welcomed everyone.

Guest speaker, GOLDOC CEO Mark Peters gave us a very informative overview of the upcoming Commonwealth Games encouraging us all to embrace the opportunity to participate in the world's largest sporting event in 2018.
Mark provided some interesting insights into the operations of GOLDOC and a series of fascinating statistics such as the provision of 800,000 pieces of fruit to athletes and officials during the games.
The first round of ticket applications closes this weekend with ballots already assured for key sports such as athletics, cycling and swimming.

In conclusion Mark fielded a number of questions and a vote of thanks was passed with acclamation.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

60th High School Reunion - He was a widower and she a widow. They had known each other for a number of years being high school classmates and having attended class reunions in the past without fail. This 60th anniversary of their class, the widower and the widow made a foursome with two other singles.
They had a wonderful evening, their spirits high. The widower throwing admiring glances across the table. The widow smiling coyly back at him.
Finally, he picked up courage to ask her, "Will you marry me?"
After about six seconds of careful consideration, she answered, "Yes,..... yes I will!"
The evening ended on a happy note for the widower. But the next morning he was troubled. Did she say Yes? or did she say No?
He couldn't remember. Try as he would, he just could not recall. He went over the conversation of the previous evening, but his mind was blank. He remembered asking the question but for the life of him he could not recall her response. With fear and trepidation, he picked up the phone and called her.
First, he explained that he couldn't remember as well as he used to. Then he reviewed the past evening.
As he gained a little more courage he then inquired of her. "When I asked if you would marry me, did you say Yes? or did you say No?
"Why you silly man, I said Yes. Yes I will ! And I meant it with all my heart."
The widower was delighted. He felt his heart skip a beat.
Then she continued. "And I am so glad you called because I couldn't remember who asked me!”

Shortly after take-off on an outbound evening Air Lingus flight from Dublin to Boston, the lead flight attendant nervously made the followingpainful announcement in her lovely Irish brogue:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so very sorry, but it appears that there has been a terrible mix-up by our catering service. I don't know how this has happened, but we have 103 passengers on board, and unfortunately, we received only 40 dinner meals. I truly apologize for this mistake and inconvenience.”
When the muttering of the passengers had died down, she continued, "Anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else can eat will receive free, unlimited drinks for the duration of our 5 hour flight.”
Her next announcement came about 2 hours later: "If anyone is hungry, we still have 40 dinners available.”
-----------------------------------------

WIFE: "There is trouble with the car. It has water in the carburetor."
HUSBAND: "Water in the carburetor? That's ridiculous "
WIFE: "I tell you the car has water in the carburetor."
HUSBAND: "You don't even know what a carburetor is. I'll check it out. Where's the car?
WIFE: "In the pool"
-----------------------------------------

My wife asked me to buy ORGANIC vegetables from the market. I went and looked around and couldn't find any.
So I grabbed a harassed and tired looking employee and said, "These vegetables are for my wife. Have they been sprayed with any poisonous chemicals?"
The produce guy looked at me and said, "No, sir, you'll have to do that yourself."
-----------------------------------------

Q: What did the chick say when it saw an orange in the nest?
A: Look at the orange mama laid.

Q: Why was the sick man arrested in his car?
A: For Driving Under the Influenza.

Q: What are two things you don't eat for breakfast?
A: Lunch and dinner.

Q: What did one skunk say to the other skunk when they were cornered?
A: "Let us spray."
