Sergeant Russ, opened the meeting calling forward Klaus and Noel to receive a bottle of wine each which was overdue from our meeting on 12 July.  Oh well, better late than never!

Nancy Smith was then called forward to propose a toast. Nancy chose to toast much loved past member, the late Phil Moore noting that not long after Hugh & her arrival on the Gold Coast they were invited to an A7ustralia Day party at Phil & Bev Moore's residence. This was indeed a wonderful introduction to the hospitality and friendship for which Australians are renowned.

 

For the second successive week President Bruce welcomed 38 Rotarians and guests - keep up the excellent attendance  - and outlined that this meeting was one for fun and fellowship and offered everyone present the opportunity to contribute and to start the ball rolling provided an update on the launch of the Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Awards. 

 

Bruce then invited Lawrie Lynch to provide a brief outline of a recent trip he and Lisa had made to Murgon with 10 youngsters (aged 10 to 16) from the PCYC. Unfortunately two became ill requiring medivac back to the Gold Coast. Apart from discovering that none of the children knew how to do any washing, everything else went well and it was a most enjoyable experience. Congratulation to both Lawrie and Lisa and please keep up the good work.

 

Bruce then handed the microphone over to Tony to relate a little of what ultimately was a good news story.

For many in the Club Sunday night and Monday were very much the norm but not so for Tony and his family.  We all became very aware that there was a little girl, Jocelyn, aged five missing on the Gold Coast but many were unaware that little Jocelyn is the Granddaughter of Kathy & Tony Lewis.

Tony outlined how the events unfolded and how as time went by he became more and more pessimistic that the outcome would not be what everyone hoped and prayed for. We can only imagine what the family was going through.  The search involved hundreds of Police and SES volunteers not to mention all the members of the public (including some players from Gold Coast Suns)who came out to join the search. Two helicopters, police and public on horseback, motorcycles, cycles and on foot.

Late on Monday afternoon, just when concern was growing that Jocelyn would not be found before nightfall, word came through that two female volunteers had discovered her and that she was in good health despite all that she had experienced.

Tony expressed his and his family's sincere thanks to the Police Service,  the SES, the media and all the volunteers that together had returned Jocelyn alive and well to the waiting arms of her family.  

 

A wonderful meal was enjoyed by all and our thanks go to all those who contributed and are highlighted in "The Meeting in Pictures" segment which follows. 

 

Sergeant Russ then offered the members the opportunity to contribute anecdotes, jokes, trivia, etc. to entertain and amuse their fellow Rotarians and guests. Noel Hodges, Klaus Axmann, Neil Baldwin, John Monks, Uwe Seifert, Grahame Werrell and Kevin O'Brien took up the opportunity.

 

Graham Sivyer and his mandolin than entertained all present with a musical presentation of high quality.

A man who had been stranded on a desert island for 10 years all alone sees an unusual speck on the horizon. “It’s certainly not a ship,” he thinks to himself. As the speck gets closer he rules out the possibility of a small boat, then even a raft.
Suddenly emerging from the surf walking towards him comes a drop-dead gorgeous woman wearing a wetsuit and scuba gear. She approaches the stunned guy and asks, “How long has it been since you’ve had a cigarette?”

Then she starts slowly unzipping the long zipper that runs down the front of her wetsuit, looks at the man seductively and asks, “And how long has it been since you’ve played around?”
The guy, with tears in his eyes, replies, “Oh my God. Don’t tell me you’ve got golf clubs in there.”
