Last Thursday Andrew, Bruce, Louise, PE Graham and I made the trek down to Tyalgum to attend the RYTS dinner. There were several other Rotarians there and some Rotaractors from Burleigh so there was quite a gathering. It was an amazing night and I am in awe of the young people (the Red Shirts) who organise and run this program. The camaraderie and companionship between the awardees were so evident and this after only a couple of days. They are LOUD and so enthusiastic, and we were happy to join in the festivities. Elsewhere in the Rotalite you may see photos of Bruce and I. No comment is necessary! Spending time with young people makes you realise that our money spent on sponsorship is a great investment in future Rotarians and young Australians. There were a couple of awardees to whom life has given extra challenges but they were included in everything and were obviously loving the experience.

Thanks to Nayer and Nasser for the presentation on Malawi. They went to a lot of trouble to give a very polished and comprehensive talk which was appreciated by all present.

Thanks also to Uwe and Neil B for organising out first family Christmas day last weekend. I had a great time and so did all my grandchildren. It was a lovely setting and very appropriate as the building we were using had been erected by our club in the early nineties.

Harold, Joey and I did a sausage sizzle at the Surfers Paradise SS last night as a fundraiser for the Crisis Centre. We took just under $1,000.00 in 2 hours so we were very busy people but it was a great outcome for the Church.

Our Christmas party is on the 18^th. Please pay beforehand as I don’t want anyone to have duty that night. Please also invite anyone you know who usually joins us. I don’t have the contacts for them and I hope those who are usually invited can come along. It is $35 for the night.

ALMONER REPORT - Bob Jordan

I was lucky enough to visit Keith and Lorraine Hawton on Wednesday when I dropped off a box of Christmas Cakes.

Keith was in good spirits and expressed disappointment that he was not able to attend meetings, as he has very little energy.

He was very interested in the outcome of the Annual Meeting and which members were going to form the Board around Grahame in 2019/2020 and also the President Elect for 2020/2021.

Keith and Lorraine wanted to express to every member their best wishes for the Christmas period and you might appreciate from Lorraine's perspective, it is a day to day experience, given Keith's current condition.

Ian Cowan- Unfortunately Ian is back in hospital, not well at all, you can if you wish visit him but I would check with Gay first .Gay ,herself is not well and is struggling with shingles which of course prevents her from visiting Ian.

MEMBER ANECDOTE

NAYER KAVIANI

Some of the memories remain with you for a long time. Somehow you can’t forget them specially when there is display of ultimate care and consideration. Many years ago in NZ we were travelling from Palmerston North to Auckland for a long weekend get away. Our children were young and the drive was a bit too long for their likings.

However, they were excited for the trip and looking forward to see their cousins in Auckland. For those of you Kiwis or have visited North Island of NZ, you know that there is a beautiful lake in the middle of North Island on the way to Auckland called Lake Taupo. There was a tradition/ ritual for Nasser that every time that we were passing this Lake he needed to have a swim to recover from the driving fatigue! And that Friday afternoon was not any different. Although we were running a bit late, however, Nasser had to go for his swim.

So I took the kids out of the car for a walk around the lake while Nasser went swimming. After 15 minutes when he returned in my surprise he asked me for the car keys!! I said you have the keys as we left the car before you!!

Anyway he looked in his swimmer’s pocket but no sign of the car keys! We all started looking around to find the keys, with no result. As we were getting frustrated and worried, while the kids were tired and crying we were wondering what is our next step as the sun was disappearing fast. A young lady passed us and suddenly came back and asked us if we have lost some thing?? We said yes our car keys. She opened her hand and said is this yours? We couldn’t believe our eyes and we all shouted YES….., where was it? She said she was swimming in the lake and saw this bunch of keys at the bottom of the lake so she decided to dive down and grab the keys!! We couldn’t believe this, just imagine the keys at the bottom of the big lake, someone diving down about 10 meters, to grab them and amongst hundreds of people around the lake she spotting us ….what do you call this, I call it a miracle.

We couldn’t thank her enough. This was just an unforgettable act of care and consideration- and Nasser was off the hook this time!!

Broadbeach sponsored 5 students to attend the camp and President Pauline, Past President Bruce & Louise, President Elect Graham and Youth Director Andrew all attended the camp for dinner on Thursday.

Sergeant Kevin O'Brien opened the meeting and welcomed fellow Rotarians. To be honest Kevin in his usual fashion told a shocker of a story about the moth,the light and Graham Sivyer. Kevin laughed first and we all followed. Not sure as Sergeant if he fined himself. But as usual Kevin did a sterling job.

Past President Neil Baldwin proposed a toast to families as we are in the Christmas spirit.

President Pauline welcomed Honorary members and guests. Spoke of the Sunday family in the park event last Sunday and reminded all members of our own Christmas party to be held at the Quality Inn Hotel at a cost of $35.00 and to be held on Tuesday the 18th December at the usual time. So Santa does not miss anybody please book early.

The Annual General Meeting of the Club was then held conducted by Treasurer Tony Lewis. Tony moved that the minutes as presented be accepted as a true and correct record. Seconded by Bob Jordan. Carried.Tony further moved that the Club Auditors and Insurers for the previous year be retained. Seconded Noel Hodges.

AGM closed in near record time.

Reports : Noel Hodges advised the money raised ( $213.24 ) by Somerset College for the drought appeal would go to the Charleville Rotary Club along with the $8,000 previously raised. President Pauline advised that the funds would be distributed via a debit card to the parties in need.

Bob Jordan advised that the Club had just received $500 from the Southport RC for the carousel rides.

Sergeant Kevin conducted a fun Sergeant session. Bunyips were Alain Charles and Noel Phingsthorne.

Noel Hodges won the Raffle and Peter Tomlinson won the heads and Tails.

Guest Speakers : Club Members Nasser and Nayer Kaviani were introduced by President Pauline.

Nasser and Nayer gave the meeting a very intresting presentation on their recent trip to South Africa and in particular to the land locked Malawi region where their daughter, son in law and two beautiful grandchildren live. The daughter a former lawyer works in the Human Rights sector with UNICEF. This is a very third world region. They also did a safari to Zambia.

The scribe enjoyed the presentation so much he did more listening than writing. Should any Rotarian want to receive the presentation by email please see Nasser and he will forward this to you.

Following a short question time Nasser and Nayer were thanked by the club and of course they received the two Scotch glasses which can only be obtained by addressing the Club as a guest speaker.

Meeting closed at 8pm.
