Discussion occurred around a meeting while members are hosting a Rotary Friendship Exchange Team from Arizona during October and it was agreed to move the October Fellowship Meeting from Tuesday 22 October to Monday 1 October to share fellowship with the visiting team while providing them with an original ‘Aussie BBQ”.
The outcome of the last sausage sizzle at Bunnings was noted, with a gross amount of $1255 being taken. Members are thanked for their efforts with completing this sizzle even after some initial hiccups.
Members are requested to note that our Containers for Change member Colin will not be at the next meeting, but members are still encouraged to bring their empty containers to The Hub in readiness for Colin’s return.
We were entertained by Guest speaker Dr Tim O’Dowd, the author of 2 books with the latest titled Making Sense of Health, which was written during COVID lockdown and the subject of Tim’s talk, indicating that it was a magic chore in writing a book.
Key points from Tim’s address are:
The book Making Sense of Health is ‘my analysis of problems, influences, debates and opportunities relating to your health. When you become fully aware of what supports and what threatens your precious body you become the best person to safeguard your future health’.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines Health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Health is a concept that is difficult to define, something we desire – especially when we lose it.
Influences on our health are – Social – Economic – Environmental – Political – Commercial – Personal.
The 4 vital personal pillars determining health status are:
1 Nourishment
2 Movement
3 Recovery (sleep and deep rest/self- restoration)
4 Engagement (social and with nature), connectedness and purpose
Tim concluded his talk with The Prevention Playbook
· Be aware of what your body requires for optimal function and good health
· Be aware of what can damage/degrade optimal function
· Determine your present health status
· Commit to taking personal control
Past President Andrew presented Dr Tim with a Broadbeach glass in thanking him for his presentation.
See you at the August Fellowship meeting on Tuesday 19 August.
Yours in Rotary,\
Neil
